A win-win situation! RBI's bumper dividend will leave India's new government spoilt for choice
fiscal deficit quicker, both of which will be cheered by investors. On Wednesday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a record 2.11 trillion rupees dividend transfer to the government, more than double New Delhi's and street estimates, leading to a decline in bond yields and a rise in equity markets. The surplus fund can help the new government, which will take charge after the current elections, bring down its fiscal deficit by 0.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) or increase spending on infrastructure or «populist» stimulus, Citi Research's Samiran Chakraborty said.

Karnataka: CM Siddaramaiah asks banks not to adjust drought relief funds against farm loan dues
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday asked banks not to adjust drought relief funds the government has released to individual farmers through a direct benefit transfer (DBT) against the dues of their agriculture loans. The CM, who chaired a meeting of deputy commissioners and zilla panchayat CEOs in the presence of ministers and department secretaries, said officials must ensure farmers got loans for the oncoming crop season on time. The government had already sent this year's agriculture credit plans, and officials must now act by coordinating with bankers in districts, he said. Siddaramaiah disapproved of the way insurance firms were handling the crop loss insurance claims. Such conduct would bring bad name to the government, he said, and asked officials to discuss with insurance firms and make life easy for farmers.

RBI dividend boost to help in improving budget math
₹16.85 trillion in the interim budget presented in February. The Centre narrowed its fiscal deficit target for FY24 to 5.8%of GDP in the Revised Estimates (RE), lower than the budgeted fiscal deficit estimate of 5.9%, on the back of robust tax collection and higher dividend payouts. Also Read: Banks may see waiver of provisioning of loans to MSMEsOn Wednesday, the RBI approved a dividend of ₹2.11 trillion for the Central government for FY24 – a massive 141% higher than in FY23. To be sure, the fiscal deficit as a share of GDP would also depend on the economic growth rate and the inflation trend, in addition to adjustments to spending and changes in receipts. The latest dividend payout from the RBI will be instrumental in compensating for any slippages in tax revenue or increased public spending in FY25, and ensure fiscal deficit reduction is in sync with the committed glide path of 4.5% by FY26, experts said.

Unjustly targeted, BJP's show-cause notice demoralizing: Jayant Sinha
BJP MP Jayant Sinha, who was asked by the party to show cause for not taking part in campaigning, on Thursday said he was being «unjustly targeted» and the public notice amounted to demoralising dedicated workers like him. Replying to the show cause notice, Sinha said it was issued to him though he had on March 2 communicated to BJP president JP Nadda that he would not be able to shoulder electoral responsibilities as he would focus on combating issues arising from global climate change. The Hazaribagh MP also said that it was wrong for the party to allege that he did not cast his vote on May 20, since he had exercised his franchise through postal ballot and was not in the country on the polling day. «Given my contributions to the party and the circumstances, the public issuance of your letter is unseemly. Your approach demoralizes dedicated party workers and undermines the party's collective efforts. Additionally, despite my loyalty and hard work for the party, it appears that I am being unjustly targeted,» the former Union minister replied on the show cause notice via a post on X.
