Flagging FDI: India must find ways to attract more of it before it's too late
Many shall be restored that now are fallen and many shall fall that now are in honour— Horace After having fallen during covid, the Indian economy now finds itself among the most honoured globally. Most high-frequency indicators are firing vigorously and recent headline GDP numbers have been buoyant beyond expectations. A fiscally restrained budget in an election year and sensible policy interventions have ensured that confidence in the economy and the government’s ability to manage it is high, and the stock market is undergoing one of its periodic bouts of exuberance.

Ram Mandir inauguration: More than 1,240 cyberattacks blocked
Ram Mandir inauguration in January, hackers and cyber criminals, predominantly from China and Pakistan, were constantly targeting the websites of the Ram Temple, Prasar Bharti and other digital assets of critical infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh (UP), officials told ET. The government had blocked 1244 IP addresses, of which 999 were from China alone. «The rest of the blocked addresses were from Pakistan, Hong Kong and Cambodia,» officials said. Since the government had anticipated a rise in cyber-attacks during the inauguration, all the pre-emptive measures were put in place. The Telecom Security Operation Centre (TSOC) was monitoring around 264 websites including that of the Ram Temple, Prasar Bharti, UP Police, airport, UP tourism, and the power grid among others round the clock to prevent any cyber-attack. «It was a 7-day drill to guard the digital assets as we had anticipated a rise in cyber-attacks. Since the main event was on January 21, we had to secure the assets before and after the event also,» a person privy to the details said.

Sri Lanka's debt restructuring plan could be completed by June: Officials
New Delhi: The plan to restructure Sri Lanka’s debt could be completed by June, two people aware of the matter said, as the island-nation prepared to reach an agreement with its creditors in the coming months. "We expect that the agreements will be finalized around June, which will help settle the debt restructuring process with Sri Lanka," said one of the officials mentioned above, requesting anonymity. In May 2022, India's southern neighbour defaulted on its overseas debt after its worst financial crisis since independence in 1948 emptied out foreign exchange reserves.

China drops 'peaceful reunification' reference to Taiwan, raises defence spending by 7.2%
China reiterated a call for "reunification" with Taiwan, but added emphasis that it wants to "be firm" in doing so and dropped the descriptor "peaceful", which had been used in previous reports. Although it is not the first time that China had omitted the word "peaceful", the change in language is closely watched as a possible sign of a more assertive stance towards Taiwan. China has been increasing its military budget, and it has been more than doubled under President Xi Jinping's 11 years in office, Reuters reported.

Rajnath Singh addresses naval commanders; witnesses 'twin-carrier' operation
Rajnath Singh on Tuesday witnessed the combat prowess of aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya in a «twin-carrier» operation in the Arabian Sea and addressed the top naval commanders on the evolving maritime security scenario in view of geo-political upheavals. The inaugural session of the three-day naval commanders conference saw Singh embarking at sea to witness the Navy's ability to conduct operations deploying both the aircraft carriers. In his address to the commanders, Singh highlighted the Navy's important role in maritime security and maintaining India's sovereignty and urged the commanders to remain prepared to deal with all kinds of challenges while assuring the government's all-possible support. «If India's reputation has increased in the Indian Ocean Region and wider Indo-Pacific, it is due to the bravery and promptness of our Navy,» he said.
