Union Budget news: Fiscal prudence likely to remain top priority yet again for FM Sitharaman?
Narendra Modi government has time and again stressed that fiscal prudence remains a top priority for the dispensation with an eye on FY26 by when it targets to bring the fiscal deficit down to 4.5 per cent. Come February 1, analysts expect Sitharaman to continue the BJP government's focus on infrastructure spending with an aim to lower the fiscal deficit from the target of 5.9 per cent of GDP set for the current financial year. Analysts have said that high hopes of re-election in April-May 2024 has allowed the Modi government to keep a check on populist measures and instead focus on its infrastructure spending like roads, power plants, among other things. The government expects the Indian economy to grow at 7.3 per cent in the ongoing financial year, as per the First Advance Estimates released Friday.

6 stock recommendations from Rajesh Palviya for the next week
Most of the real estate stocks have done well and we believe that another 5% to 10% kind of rally can be expected in the coming week, says Rajesh Palviya, Axis Securities. Edited excerpts. Do you believe that we could be range bound in the times ahead or there could be some weakness or strengthening from these levels next week? If we analyse the tone, it is on the bullish side and yes benchmark indices are behaving in a range-bound kind of activity since the last couple of trading sessions. If we analyse the derivative data, major put writing activities are seen around 21,500 and 21,600 strikes. So, this range is likely to act as a good support area in the decline. Even in Friday's session, we have seen a sharp dip and then again the major put writing activity has been witnessed around 21,500 strikes. We have seen a sharp pullback action from the lower end of the corrective move. So, on the higher side, the major supply zone is still placed at 21,750. That level needs to be taken out by the Nifty, then we can see short covering action and then possibly the Nifty can scale up to the level of 21,900, even beyond the 22,000 kind of level.

Myanmar armed ethnic groups claim key northern town
online scam operations in another blow to the embattled junta. The military is facing its biggest threat since seizing power in a 2021 coup after three armed ethnic groups — known as the Three Brotherhood Alliance — launched a sweeping October offensive in northern Shan state. Since November people have been fleeing Laukkai town, located in a district bordering China that is run by a Myanmar military-aligned militia and notorious for gambling, prostitution and online scams run out of compounds staffed by thousands of people, many trafficked. The alliance — made up of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Arakan Army (AA) and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) — said the town was now under their control. «All members from the Myanmar Army's Military Operational Command in Laukkai were disarmed and Laukkai became a clean area where there are no more members of the Myanmar Army,» the alliance said in a statement. It added that scores of junta soldiers, including some officers, had been captured and disarmed. The junta has not commented. TNLA Brigadier-General Tar Bhone Kyaw confirmed Saturday that the MNDAA had taken Laukkai. «It is their land, they got it back now,» he told AFP.

Govt’s Vision ‘47 set to target 50,000km of expressways
Mint broke the story in October on the government’s plan to prematurely exit the Bharatamala highway programme conceived six years ago, and start building largely access-controlled highways in the country. The development of expressways was critical for the next phase of infrastructure development, as it would lead to faster travel, reduce fuel consumption and help lower logistics cost, Jain said, briefing media persons about the achievements of the ministry in 2023. The government finalized the Bharatmala Pariyojana in 2017, with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approving the phase 1 of the programme the same year.

Piyush Goyal asks auto industry to raise share of vehicles exports to 50% from 14% now
Piyush Goyal on Friday urged the automobile industry to set a target of increasing the share of vehicles being exported to 50% of all passenger vehicles produced in the country by 2030 from 14% in the last fiscal. “With our arbitrage in labour costs and skilled manpower pool, India should have 50% export share in the auto sector. The auto industry should not limit itself to achieving a 25% export share and instead aim for at least a 50% export share,” Goyal said at the curtain raiser of Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024, which is scheduled to be held from February 1-3 February. India’s contribution to the world is increasing rapidly with share of vehicles being exported from 14% at present, to about 25% of all passenger vehicles produced in India by 2030.
