COST UPS Target track Steel companies may gain from government’s infra push
steel sector is favourable despite the fact that anaemic growth in some of the world’s largest steel-consuming economies could impact prices, thanks to the government’s accelerated spending on infrastructure over the last few months, analysts said. Steel finds the maximum consumption in the infrastructure space. With the Centre spending nearly a third of its budgeted funds on big-ticket infrastructure projects, demand for steel grew 13% year on year between April and July. The government’s spending in this period is around 6 percentage points higher than the average of 26% it has spent in these months over the last four years, Crisil Market Intelligence said in a note. Demand for steel, consequently, is seen growing in doubledigits for the third consecutive year in the current fiscal, rating agencies ICRA and Crisil said. This heightened demand for steel is not only seen absorbing the additional steel capacities that will come on board in the domestic market but will also shield prices from the weak pricing trends in the global market. The government has increased its outlay for spending on infrastructure by around 33% to ₹10 lakh crore for FY24.

UPS Target Reuters country Sugar stocks in sweet spot with supply shortage looming large
Shares of sugar companies soared on Thursday on news reports that output in Maharashtra, India's highest-producing state, could fall in the 2023-24 crop year to its lowest in four years. This could lead to higher sugar prices and boost the profitability of top companies in the sector, said analysts.Sakthi Sugars jumped 11.3%, Dhampur Sugar gained 10.4%, Dwarikesh Sugar rose 9.8%, Bajaj Hindusthan advanced 7.2% and Balrampur Chini moved up 4.8%. A Reuters report said Maharashtra's sugar output could fall 14% in the 2023-24 crop year due to lower cane yields following the driest August in more than a century. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are among the top sugarcane-producing states in the country, and a dry spell because of the El Nino effect will likely affect supply. Sugar companies are expected to witness strong earnings growth till FY26, according to brokerage DAM Capital. «We believe fast developing El Nino conditions would further hamper sugar production in these states and keep domestic sugar prices above ₹37/kg,» said DAM's analyst Sanjay Manyal in a note to clients.

UPS Target OIL looks at ways to bring home $150 mln payout from Russia
Oil India is exploring legal as well as diplomatic channels to repatriate its dividends worth $150 million from Russia, said its chairman, Ranjit Rath. Oil India, Indian Oil Corporation, BPCL and ONGC have participating interests in multiple oil and gas projects in Russia from which they earn dividends periodically. Companies have been receiving dividends but have been unable to transfer them out of Russia since February 2022 due to the banking restrictions in the wake of the Ukraine war and the western sanctions on Moscow. Indian Oil and BPCL have similar amounts of dividends stuck in Russia, totalling $450 million for the three companies, Rath said. This is a «temporary phenomenon» and the company is «very positive about investments in Russia», he said, adding that the company is exploring legal, banking and government-to-government options to get the dividends back. The production at Russian fields in which Oil India has stakes hasn't been affected by the output cut decisions made by the producer cartel OPEC+ of which Russia is a key member, Rath said. Oil India will primarily focus on domestic exploration and production, said its chairman. Rising oil prices won't change the company's investment trajectory, he said. A windfall tax since last year has capped the crude price realisation for Indian state-run producers.
