Over 100 militants still active in J&K, says data
security forces step up counter insurgency operations in south Kashmir's Anantnag, the number of active militants remains over 100 with foreign terrorists outnumbering the local recruits. As many as 71 foreign militants were active in the region as compared to 38 local terrorists, according to data available with central agencies.
On Wednesday morning, the militants targeted a joint team of security forces, comprising Army and police personnel, and killed three officers, including a Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Superintendent of Police.
The number of casualties among the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir has so far remained low this year but with the three deaths on Wednesday, the number has climbed to 20 compared to 28 till September 2022. The total number of soldiers killed during the anti-militancy operations in J&K was 30 last year.
J&K police and the Indian Army, in a joint operation till August this year, killed 39 militants, of which 31 were foreigners, officials said citing the data.
When compared to 2022, there has been a nearly 75% decline in the number of militants killed last year compared to 2023. The number of terrorists gunned down last year till August were 152 compared to 39 this year.
According to officials, a total of 187 militants were killed by security forces in 2022 --130 of them were locals and 57 foreigners.
The number of civilians killed in J&K till August this year stood at nine compared to 24 last year during the same period, added officials. The twin terror attacks in Rajouri on January 1 and 2 this year led to the deaths of seven civilians and injured dozen others while an IED was used to kill five Army soldiers in Poonch.
