Not necessary to take a call on IPEF trade pillar by November
Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) next week, officials have said it is not necessary for India to take a call on joining the trade pillar of the pact by the target conclusion date of November. Negotiators said India can join the IPEF trade pillar later, but there is a need to build consensus. While the supply chain agreement of the IPEF is awaiting comments from various ministries before it is sent for Cabinet approval, officials said negotiations on clean economy and fair economy are progressing well. New Delhi has an observer status on the trade pillar negotiations which deal with commitments required on environment, labour, agriculture, digital trade and public procurement.

Zambia agrees to hand disputed copper assets back to Vedanta
Zambia has agreed to return control of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to Vedanta Resources, mines minister Paul Kabuswe said on Tuesday, ending a row over the ownership of the assets that erupted in 2019 when authorities seized the mines. The government, which owns a 20% stake in KCM through ZCCM-IH, will allow Vedanta to resume control and operate KCM's mines and smelter after the company renewed a pledge to invest more than $1.2 billion to increase output and repay outstanding debts, Kabuswe said. A shareholders' agreement is being reworked to make the commitments from both shareholders legally binding, Kabuswe added. The legal details of the agreement and reinstatement of the KCM board, would be finalised within the next three months, the minister said. Ties between Zambia and Vedanta, owned by billionaire Anil Agarwal, soured after former President Edgar Lungu's government orchestrated the seizure of the KCM assets and forced liquidation in May 2019, accusing the Indian company of failing to meet plans to invest in increasing mining output. The forced takeover nearly paralysed operations at the KCM and triggered protracted battles, with Vedanta mounting legal battles including approaching an arbitration court in London to recover the copper assets. «It is not a secret that the asset has deteriorated a great deal and the production output has substantially reduced,» Kabuswe told journalists in Lusaka.

Eris: Symptoms, Vaccines and all about the new dominant Covid variant which is leading to a fresh wave in the U.S and U.K
This renewed caution is due to the emergence of two new variants: Omicron EG.5 (Eris), predominant in the US, and the spreading BA.2.86 variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies EG.5 as a «variant of interest» as cases increase worldwide. While EG.5 doesn't appear substantially more dangerous than other variants, health officials remain vigilant. The situation underscores the importance of vaccination, mask-wearing, and adherence to public health guidelines, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Birla Corporation plans to ramp up cement production to 25 mt by FY26
Birla Corporation has drawn up a strategy to augment its cement production capacity to 25 million tonnes by the 2025-26 fiscal from the existing 20 million tonnes, officials said on Tuesday. The cement maker is planning to meet its targeted production by increasing capacity utilisation at its Mukutban plant in Maharashtra, setting up the second clinker unit at Maihar in Madhya Pradesh and constructing new grinding units. «With the commissioning of Mukutban plant, we have virtually ring-fenced our core market of central India — which we can service seamlessly from our six plants, namely Maihar, Satna, Kundangunj, Raebareli, Chanderia, and now, Mukutban. »The strategic location of these plants and standardisation of product quality allow us to interchange source of supplies to maximise realisation and serviceability for our customers," Birla Corporation Chairman Harsh V Lodha told shareholders during the 103rd annual general meeting of the company here. With the increasing capacity utilisation of the Mukutban unit, the company is confident of increasing its market share in the premium cement segment in that state, where other major players are active.

US Fed official signals support for rate pause at next meeting
But despite making significant progress, inflation remains above the Fed's long-term target of two percent. Meanwhile, the US jobs market has shown growing signs of softening in recent months, a key precondition for the Fed to contemplate an end to its cycle of monetary tightening. «That was a helluva good week of data we got last week, and the key thing out of it is it's going to allow us to proceed carefully,» Fed governor Christopher Waller said in an interview with CNBC, referring in part to last week's jobs data. «There’s nothing that is saying we need to do anything imminent any time soon, so we can just sit there, wait for the data, see if things continue,» he added. Waller's comments follow a similarly cautious view to Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who told the Jackson Hole economic symposium in Wyoming at the end of August that the Fed would proceed «carefully» from now on. Investors and analysts overwhelmingly expect the Fed to pause its hiking cycle at its next rate-setting meeting on September 19-20, while keeping the prospect of another hike later in the year alive. Futures traders currently put the probability of a rate pause in September at 95 percent, and the chance of another hike in November at around 40 percent, according to data from CME Group. On Tuesday Waller indicated the Fed should keep its options open in the months ahead. «I don’t think one more hike would necessarily throw the economy into a recession if we did feel we needed to do one,» he told CNBC.
