Maharashtra protest over sexual abuse of minors; Badlapur tracks blocked
Badlapur railway station against the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls at a local school. The crowd sat on tracks for several hours, paralysing Central Railway traffic and demanding custody of the accused. They were protesting the delay in filing of an FIR by the police. The rail roko protest led to the diversion of 12 long-distance trains and suspension of local train services on the Ambernath-Karjat section of Central Railway. The protesters were demanding that the accused be handed over to them so that they could hang him in public. One of the reasons for the anger was the response of the Badlapur police. Crackdown on pesky telemarketers: TRAI asks telcos to curb misuse of message headers, content templates
messaging services and protect consumers from fraudulent practices. Continuing its offensive against unsolicited spam calls and messages, TRAI made it clear that from September 1, 2024, all access service providers will be prohibited from transmitting messages containing URLs, OTT links, or call back numbers which are not 'whitelisted' (authorised) by the senders. To enhance message traceability, TRAI has mandated that the trail of all messages from senders to recipients must be traceable from November 1, 2024. Any message with an undefined or mismatched telemarketer chain will be rejected. The latest move assumes significance as TRAI has cracked the whip on unauthorised telemarketers indulging in promotional calls and messages to telecom subscribers. Last week, TRAI directed telcos to disconnect all telecom resources of unregistered telemarketers found making spam calls, and to blacklist them for up to two years.

Comparing OTT services to telecom services completely erroneous: BIF
telecom operators' suggestion to bring internet call and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Google Meet under the ambit of telecom licences. Broadband India Forum (BIF) President TV Ramachandran, in a statement, said bringing OTT (over-the-top) services under the Telecom Act is in complete violation of Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equal treatment to every person and entity. «Comparing OTT services to telecom services of voice and SMS is completely erroneous and overlooks the vast and critical differences between the two categories,» Ramachandran said. He said telecom service providers enjoy several exclusive and unique rights that include the right to interference-free spectrum, numbering resources, right of way to set up infrastructure etc. However, OTT players neither have these privileges nor do they own the network or control the access to telecom infrastructure.

Bengaluru Traffic Police advises companies on ORR to implement WFH on August 14
Bengaluru traffic police have issued an advisory to companies along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to implement work-from-home (WFH) arrangements on August 14. The recommendation comes in anticipation of heavy traffic congestion due to a long weekend and predicted heavy rainfall. On August 13, the Bengaluru traffic police issued this advisory through a letter addressed to the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA). Joint Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru traffic) MN Anucheth stated, «This is to bring to your attention that heavy traffic congestion is expected on August 14, 2024, due to the upcoming long weekend coupled with the predicted heavy rainfall.» ORRCA represents technology parks, IT/ITeS companies, and software development and research centres on the Central Silk Board-KR Pura section of ORR. The advisory further explained, «To minimize disruptions and avoid undue delays, it is requested that member companies consider allowing WFH for their employees on August 14. This measure will not only reduce the number of vehicles on the road but also ensure a smoother commute for those who need to travel.»
