UPS Election awards Freedom travelers BJP hand in Congress glove
Narendra Modi's recent comparison of Congress with pre-Independence-era Muslim League is a direct attack on the GOP's credentials as sole inheritor of the freedom struggle legacy. It also tells us how far BJP has travelled to not just lay claim to this space but also is prepared to take it as its own — an effort at the heart of its revival since 2014. BJP has, over the past decade, drawn on Congress' leadership pantheon. It took advantage of the latter's tendency to predominantly play up the legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi family while paying little or no attention to the contribution of others. As result, today, BJP has acquired a reasonable degree of ownership on legacies of leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar and Subhas Chandra Bose. Congress of that era had many political strands, and each of these leaders represented one thought or the other. What BJP has done is, it has worked on owning each of them, including Mohandas Gandhi. In fact, leaving aside Jawaharlal Nehru, BJP has accepted almost all greats from the decades of the 1920s and 1930s who shaped the Independence movement.

FIVE Booking Election blues information travelers Department Wedding Season Blues: Voters and brides compete for taxis in Uttarakhand
Elections in Uttarakhand, coinciding with the peak wedding season, have resulted in a surge in demand for buses and cabs across the state. Families who had made preparations for weddings say they are struggling for vehicles for their baraats (wedding processions) since a large number of taxis and buses have been diverted for election duty. According to information made available by the transport department, a total of 12,395 vehicles, including 3,653 buses and 7,161 private taxis and cabs, have been acquired by state authorities for election duty. This has led to vehicle bookings for weddings being cancelled abruptly. All five Lok Sabha constituencies in the state will go to the hustings in the first of the seven-phase polls on April 19. This year, peak wedding season has also arrived around this time with April 18, just a day before the polls, being considered the most auspicious day of the season to get married. Priests say that the wedding season gains momentum after Baisakhi on April 13, and extends until April 24.

UPS Citizens SEC wellness cover travelers Department Does the new income tax regime suit you? Find out who should move from the old tax regime to the new one
tax matters can put you in a tight spot. Having coughed up a high tax for the past three months, Shilpa Bose knows this too well. The Delhi-based marketing professional submitted investment proof and other documents before the 15 January deadline, but still ended up paying a high tax. “The finance department didn’t take into account my tax-saving investments, medical insurance premium and home loan interest payments,” she says. That’s because Bose had not specified her choice of tax regime, which put her under the new tax regime by default and made her ineligible to claim many tax deductions and exemptions. A lot of salaried taxpayers might be in the same boat. Last year’s Budget had made the new tax regime the default option for salaried taxpayers. The employees who did not inform their companies about the tax regime they preferred were automatically put in the new tax regime. OLD REGIME

Kuki communities in Manipur since May 3 last year, such a flurry of activity in the marketplace signals a revival of normalcy. “What normalcy?” Devi retorts with a poignant blend of anger and despair. “My daughter Mayuda is still confined in the shelters of a relief camp near Imphal. When the unrest erupted, she was just married, starting a new life with her husband in Churachandpur. The Kukis ravaged all their personal belongings, including the grocery shop they had taken on rent.” That’s just one side of the story. About 30 km northeast of Imphal, in Shangkai, Ngamminlen Haokip recounts a harrowing incident of armed Meitei assailants scaling up a nearby hill before launching a deadly assault on Thowai Kuki village.
