Age-based investment vs goal-based investment: Which works better?
financial planning, one needs to set a goal, an objective, a direction or an aspiration. Historically, when an investor starts making a financial plan, they usually follow one of the two schools of thought – goal-based investing or age-based investing. But when one starts financial planning the most important concept is asset allocation, which simply means how much money one needs to park in which asset.

US tries to downplay differences with India; seeks engagement to address Ukraine-Hamas conflicts
India over an alleged plot to kill Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and expressed its willingness to engage with New Delhi in resolving the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. “I would say that we would welcome India’s constructive engagement in these two matters (wars in Ukraine and Gaza) as we welcome constructive engagement from countries around the world,” US state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said. He said the Joe Biden administration has focused a “great deal of time and attention” on the ties with India. Miller’s comments came ahead of foreign minister S Jaishankar’s Moscow trip later this week. India, which has maintained neutrality in the Ukraine war and continued its engagements with Russia, favours dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward to end the conflict. India has strong ties with Israel as well as with the Arab world. The country recently hosted the Sultan of Oman.

Walmart, Amazon in rush to ensure deliveries for last-minute shoppers
Target and Amazon are all-in on the shipping wars, a move retail experts say will help them maintain a competitive edge against low-cost Chinese retailers Shein and Temu. For Walmart and Target, their investments are also aimed at narrowing the gap in delivery speed with Amazon, which has set the standard for fast shipping and remains the king of speed. Amazon packages have been arriving at the doors of Prime customers even faster this year under the company's new distribution model, which divides the country into eight regions and predominantly ships items from warehouses in those areas. The idea, according to Amazon, is to get shipments to travel shorter distances with fewer touchpoints, which helps the company not only speed up deliveries but also cuts down on costs.

Air passenger demand in December strongest since pandemic
₹106,155.67 per kl on 1 December, marking the second reduction in a month after a nearly 6% decrease on 1 November. Despite these cuts, prices remain over 80% higher than in 2019. This consecutive reduction offers some respite to Indian airlines, which had added a fuel surcharge in October to offset the soaring costs.

Grocery price hikes slow for 5th straight month in November
inflation rate held steady at 3.1 per cent in November, Statistics Canada said Tuesday, amid a “broad-based” easing in grocery price hikes. Some economists had expected a decline in the headline inflation figure, but StatCan said higher prices on travel tours and elevated housing costs kept the annual rate steady.Rents were up 7.4 per cent year-over-year — down from the previous month — and mortgage interest costs rose nearly 30 per cent annually, the agency noted.A 26.1 per cent jump in the prices for travel tours last month was offset by drops in the cost of cellular services, which StatCan said related to Black Friday deals in November.Gas prices were down last month but to a lesser extent than October, which the agency said put upward pressure on the monthly inflation figure. A drop in the price of fuel oil helped to reduce price pressures in the month, with StatCan noting the Liberal government’s temporary suspension of the federal carbon levy on home heating oil “contributed to the decline.”November was the fifth straight month that food inflation slowed, the agency noted, with grocery prices rising 4.7 per cent annually in the month.StatCan said that the easing at the grocery store was “broad-based,” with price hikes on every component in the grocery basket cooling from October’s increases.

H-1B domestic visa renewal pilot clears White House review
H-1B workers to renew their visas without leaving the United States has successfully passed review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). The State Department announced last month that the pilot program is scheduled to launch in January with an initial participation cap of 20,000 individuals. However, comprehensive details regarding eligibility and the operational aspects of the pilot will be shared when the notice is published in the Federal Register. Having cleared the OIRA review on December 15, this milestone represents the final regulatory hurdle before the official publication of the program. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the government to reduce wait times for consular services. Currently, individuals on H-1B specialty occupation visas, commonly used in the tech industry and valid for three years, need to get an appointment at a US embassy or consular office for a visa stamp after traveling abroad. The extended wait times for visa services, particularly in countries like India, the principal source of H-1B workers, have introduced uncertainties into travel plans for both these workers and their employers. The new pilot program addresses this challenge by allowing eligible H-1B workers to renew their visas within the United States, eliminating the need for international travel solely for visa renewal purposes. This move is particularly significant given that H-1B visa holders, a substantial number of whom come from India, often face prolonged wait times for visa appointments, causing disruptions to their professional and personal plans.
