markets UPS economy wellness trends Cycling rights Focus on cycles, not structural trends; better opportunities in 4 sectors: Anish Tawakley
Anish Tawakley, Deputy CIO-Equity, ICICI Prudential AMC, says he focuses more on cycles than on big 10-year structural trends. On a 10-year structural trend, one has to be in the right company because even if you look at the retailing example, it is a 10-year, 20-year trend, but it is not as if every company has done well. There are better opportunities in automobiles, capital goods, cement, and real estate because that is a sector that could still produce earnings surprises. Tawakley also says that we are still in an upcycle at the moment economically. We will reach the peak of this cycle when power capacity utilisation peaks. Let us start with your market view risk versus reward, how would you map the current market setup for our viewers? Anish Tawakley: At this point, the earnings outlook is reasonably good given that the economy is in good health. The market valuations are not cheap. So, anybody coming into the market should be coming in with at least a three-year view. One should not be coming in for very short-term gains. But the economic outlook is very healthy and the earnings outlook is also reasonably robust.

Target Booking Entertainment Food Research trends social The problem of crimes stemming from hunger
Goan crime being foiled. Thieves broke into the premises of a maker of chouriço, Goa’s spicy pork sausages. Local dogs, probably lusting after the sausages themselves, raised an alarm and the owner trapped the two thieves in the smoking room. Did the thieves eat the sausages as they waited for arrest? Food theft is one of the oldest crimes. In Christopher J Garcia’s entertaining book Food & Crime, he writes that the oldest legal texts, like the Codes of Ur-Nammu and Hammurabi include food related proscriptions. He also notes it is one of the broadest crimes: “It starts with piddly little pilfering, such as walking off with a pack of gum from the checkout line, then continues through to the highjacking of entire convoys of shellfish.” Garcia suggests that food theft works on CRAVED principles: “Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable.” Cheese fits most of these parameters. Garcia notes that “the Centre for Retail Research estimates that four per cent of all cheese produced is stolen”. This is almost a million tonnes of stolen cheese. It is easily melted or cut into different forms and can be worth a lot, especially artisanal European cheeses made with unpasteurised milk, which are banned in the US.

UPS Gap trends Trade International Nirmala Sitharaman urges banks to boost deposits as credit gap widens
Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said lenders need to focus on raising smaller deposits that come in “trickles,” but are the “bread and butter” of the banking system. She commented on the widening gap between deposits and credit, which has become a cause for concern, at a media briefing after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) board meeting in the capital on Saturday. Sitharaman said deposits and lending are the two wheels of a cart, but “deposit is moving slowly.” RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said the banking regulator had sounded out banks on this as a matter of proactive caution as the trend can lead to potential liquidity issues.
