Rising competition, price hikes & declining volumes? Amit Syngle on what Asian Paints will do going ahead
Amit Syngle, MD & CEO, Asian Paints, says the company faced pressure in the overall product mix and sales. All the metro towns and the bigger cities did not do well and even the B2B market, where Asian Paints accounted for 15-20%, did not go the way we anticipated. Industrials was the only segment where they did well. Coming to price hike, Syngle says that given the inflation in the first quarter, they took a price increase in terms of passing it on to the market. They also saw a lot of volatility in terms of the crude prices. The entire paint industry has taken a price increase and the full realisation of the price increase will happen in Q3. In Q2, your peers had managed to report a volume growth between 4% and 9%. But your numbers were clearly a bit of a miss. In fact, the volumes declined by half a percent. What led to this divergence because we usually do not see Asian Paints performing so badly versus its peers. What led to that? Amit Syngle: As we look at the last quarter, we have just touched our base in terms of the volume terms and the value has also been negative. July was good for us but then all the rainfalls and floods that came in August, were not very well distributed across the country. So, we saw a muted demand coming in both August and September and given that the seasonal component in overall our sales is very high, we saw that in all the seasonal markets, and faced pressure in our overall product mix and the overall sale.

In South America, Trump already losing a trade battle with China
White House will find itself already on the losing side in a trade battle with China, part of a bigger power realignment around the resource-rich region in Washington's backyard. Peru, the world's no. 2 copper exporter, is set to host Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders this week, with China's President Xi Jinping expected to attend and inaugurate a major new Chinese-built port in the country. Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden is also on the guest list. Peru reflects a wider challenge for the White House around South America, where China's presence has grown rapidly given its huge appetite for the region's main exports: corn, copper, soy, beef and battery-metal lithium.

Will upward momentum in IT stocks continue? Aditya Arora answers
«So, the early trends are very encouraging. And if we had to compare Nifty and Bank Nifty, then Bank Nifty looks really good and is in a good position to touch new 52-week highs,» says Aditya Arora, Adlytick. It looks like this week, unlike the previous weeks, we started on a good foot. But where do you see the markets trading at this point in time, the range that you are seeing for the benchmarks? Aditya Arora: We can see that on the screen and what I like today is the leadership in a lot of largecaps and the leadership by banking name, which is pulling Bank Nifty almost 1000 points higher, Nifty almost 200 points higher. So, the early trends are very encouraging. And if we had to compare Nifty and Bank Nifty, then Bank Nifty looks really good and is in a good position to touch new 52-week highs.

For rest of FY25, capex likely to move up and emerge as a significant trigger for market: Vinit Sambre
Vinit Sambre, Head-Equities, DSP Mutual Fund, says the visibility of good growth, cash flows, ROEs going forward over the next one or two years is going to get rewarded as there is an overall slowdown in the earnings. Within each category, it is going to be pretty stock specific because there is a significant divergence in the performance across the same categories across different companies. There is a good outlook on the consumer discretionary category as cyclical recovery should see that category doing well going forward. Sambre is positive on the banking sector and says the IT sector looks decent. He likes QSRs and says consumer discretionary is something they believe in long term. Sambre says there are sectors like utilities, and some engineering companies, which are trading at expensive valuations where he is a bit more wary about taking high exposures. What explains the market mood that we are in and when do you expect a reversal of sorts? Is it likely to happen in a few weeks or is it a matter of a few months before we see a resumption of the uptrend? Vinit Sambre: When we look at the markets over the last couple of weeks, there is good weakness which has happened.
