Gold retains its gleam as a savings-investments tool — and its allure for personal consumption is growing
savings instrument and form of insurance all rolled into one in this country, it is the yellow metal that Indians love: gold. Every household in India — from those at the bottom-most rung of the income ladder to the super-rich — has some amount of gold. However, the ways in which this item is being consumed by different household segments are changing. Universal penetration: Over 87% households are gold-owners, and 1 in 2 households has purchased gold during the last five years. Rural consumers are significant users of gold, with 63% ownership. Gold and gold-related products investors in 2020-21 were to be found among 7% of destitute families (those earning less than ₹1.25 lakh annually at 2021 prices), 16% of aspirers (annual income between ₹1.25-5 lakh), 23% of the middle class (yearly income of ₹5-30 lakh) and 33% of rich households (those earning more than ₹30 lakh annually).

The science and controversy behind Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem’
Netflix’s 3 Body Problem has sparked fascination and controversy.Based on the 2008 novel by Liu Cixin and brought to the small screen by Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the series tells the story of an impending alien invasion of Earth. The show portrays some science that left some viewers with questions and some historical events that have upset some people in China.Global News spoke to experts to separate fact from fiction and history from hysteria.A three-body problem refers to three astronomical bodies, like planets or suns, and how each object’s gravity impacts the other’s orbits. But it’s easiest to understand if we start with a two-body problem.“The closer objects are, the stronger is the gravitational pull,” York University professor emeritus of physics and astronomy Paul Delaney said. The sun is about a million times larger than the Earth, according to NASA, and so its gravity holds our planet in orbit around it.The orbit is stable, making it predictable, Delaney said. This is a two-body problem, just like the moon and the Earth, and it’s a problem that’s been solved since Sir Isaac Newton’s work on gravity.“We can theoretically figure out where (the two objects) will be as a function of time,” Delaney told Global News.“There are complications with angular momentum and tidal forces and friction,” he said, speaking from Tuscon, Ariz., “but to all practical intents and purposes, the moon will stay in a stable orbit.”There are other planets in the solar system and the moon orbits Earth.

According to the study, the 26-year-old woman underwent the popular hair treatment in June 2020, April 2021, and July 2022. Despite having no prior health concerns, she began experiencing adverse symptoms after each visit to the salon, including vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and back pain. Additionally, she reported a burning sensation on her scalp during the treatment and developed ulcers on her head. Upon examination, doctors observed kidney malfunction indicated by elevated levels of creatinine in her blood and the presence of blood in her urine. Groundwater is vanishing worldwide, but it can be rescued
The bulk of Earth’s water, about 97%, is in salty oceans and thus useless for drinking or growing food. Of the 3% that is fresh, most is locked in ice sheets and glaciers, many of which are melting rapidly into the oceans thanks to climate change. A relative few drops of fresh water are available in ponds, lakes and rivers, which are easily accessible but also vulnerable to pollution, overuse and drought. Humanity’s biggest source of fresh water — representing just 0.8% of Earth’s total water — is in underground aquifers. Decades of drought, pollution and overuse are shrinking even that precious supply, and rising sea levels threaten to spoil even more of it with saltwater incursions. A recent survey of groundwater levels at hundreds of wells worldwide found that 71% have fallen since the start of the 21st century. Groundwater loss worsened at more than half of the studied wells during that time.

Could India end up in bubble territory in next 3-5 years? Nirav Sheth explains
Nirav Sheth, CEO-Institutional Equities, Emkay Global Financial Services, says: “We are in a very fortunate situation in terms of the earnings trajectory. My earnings have almost doubled in the last three years and I am talking about the largecap sector. The macros are solid in terms of the outlook on the current account deficit, rupee, interest rates, earnings. And when you have got all the cylinders firing, you generally do not expect valuations to come cheap. You will have to take some level of risk. So sitting where I am today in terms of what we can see, I would go out and say that India could end up in bubble territory in the next three, four, five years in the emerging market universe. At the start of March, there was talk in the market that seasonally March turns out to be volatile because of a lot of adjustment happening in advance tax numbers, then a lot of leverage guys do reshuffling and usually it is a bit volatile. But the big factor that came out is that in net-net, people made a lot of gains this fiscal. This is the eighth year in a row that we are seeing positive returns from the market. Do you see the construct of the market being easy in the new fiscal year or should investors’ return expectations be moderated this year? Nirav Sheth: To answer your first question, I am very constructive on the economy; maybe constructive is not the right word. I am terribly bullish on the trajectory of the economy for the next several years, as we can see today.

Colleges brace for financial hit on Canada’s foreign student crackdown
The decision by the government of Ontario will hit hardest at colleges that have been relying entirely on foreign enrollments to drive recent growth. Colleges Ontario, an industry group, said revenue losses will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars this fall. That will mean “immediate program suspensions” and a pause on capital spending, Marketa Evans, the group’s CEO, said in a statement. “No organization can absorb such losses without significant cuts to operations.”

Harvard applications drop 5% after tumultuous year on campus
Harvard College dropped 5% from a year ago, a symbolic blow to the school after a period of turmoil that included the resignation of its president and a defeat at the Supreme Court. The school said 54,008 students sought admission for next fall’s freshman class. That marked the second consecutive year that Harvard’s undergraduate applications declined. They’re down from 61,220 two years ago, when numbers soared during the pandemic after colleges scrapped requirements for standardized testing. By contrast, rival Yale University reported 57,465 applicants, the largest in the college’s history and 10% more from than the previous year.

Surge in student attacks: A degree of safety key deciding factor for students heading to US
higher studies this year are choosing colleges based on the perceived safety of the location amid a recent surge in attacks on Indian students in the US, admission consultants said. Besides institutes and courses, parents who plan to send their ward to the US are asking questions such as which states are safe and which areas have high crime rates even as admission results for the 2024 batch have started coming in from US universities, they told ET. Some parents with daughters are even having second thoughts about the US, said Adarsh Khandelwal, CEO and founder of Collegify. There is widespread concern particularly among parents of students going for undergraduate studies as many of them would be staying away from home for the first time, consultants said. Caution is in the air amid reports of violent incidents involving Indian students, including some fatal ones, in places like Chicago, Boston, and Indiana, among others.
