The science of why your body takes longer to bounce back after 40
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Feel like it takes longer to recover from everything these days—whether it’s an injury or poor sleep? That’s the reality of what time is doing to our bodies. Researchers call our ability to bounce back from health stress “biological resilience." Evidence suggests that it declines with age, driven by biological and other factors, including parenting, work stress, changes in exercise habits and menopause.

India Inc intensifies training efforts to bridge semiconductor skills gap
semiconductor powerhouse through the India Semiconductor Mission. AMD, Micron India, and LAM Research are among companies seeking to close the skills gap by putting new recruits through technical bootcamps, teaming up students with employees working on next-generation technologies, setting up research labs in universities, and rolling out mentorship opportunities. Despite being a late entrant, the government is pushing to make India a major player in the global semiconductor space. In 2021, the Modi government launched the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, and design units.

How not to apply for job: Applicant makes major AI blunder in cover letter. CEO reacts
The blunder occurred when a job seeker applied for a content-related position at Narang’s company. The applicant, instead of submitting a polished cover letter, sent a document filled with placeholder text typically found in AI-generated templates. The letter included phrases like, “I’m proficient in [mention your key skills], and I’m passionate about [explain briefly how you can add value].” It was clear that the candidate had forgotten to replace the placeholders with personal details, making the application incomplete and impersonal.

Deepening Canada-India standoff seen as a short-term boost for Modi, Trudeau
Canada kicked out six Indian diplomats on Monday, linking them to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader and alleging a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in Canada. India retaliated by telling six Canadian diplomats to leave. Although the tit-for-tat move sent bilateral relations skidding to a new low, Narendra Modi and Justin Trudeau are unlikely to mind too much. Both leaders are in their third terms and face political challenges.

Upgrad MD Mayank Kumar steps down as firm eyes $50-60 million raise
Edtech unicorn Upgrad cofounder and managing director Mayank Kumar has stepped down from his executive role to start a new venture, sources briefed on the matter said. Starting this month, he has significantly reduced an operating role at the Mumbai-based firm while pitching to investors for his new startup which is focused on placing skilled Indian labour abroad—especially in healthcare. Coinciding with his departure is the company’s founder and chairman Ronnie Screwvala taking a more active role at the firm, these people said. Temasek-backed Upgrad is also in the final stages of closing $50-$60 million in funding from existing investors at a flat valuation of $2.25 billion, people in the know told ET. Screwvala holds 44% stake in the company, while Kumar has 8% and there are no changes in the shareholding pattern because of Kumar’s departure from the company.

A variety of paddy has found centre-stage in Delhi NCR's pollution debate
paddy variety PR-126, developed by Punjab Agricultural University, is at the center of a debate in Punjab. The AAP-led state government supports this variety, but the opposition Congress criticizes it for its lower yield. According to a TOI report, PR-126 has the advantage of reducing farming costs and helping combat air pollution in Delhi-NCR. This variety matures in 123-125 days, compared to the popular Pusa-44 variety's 155-160 days. This shorter growth period saves on irrigation and energy costs, and preserves groundwater. Additionally, it provides farmers with enough time to prepare for the next crop without resorting to stubble burning. However, PR-126 yields 4-5 quintals less per acre than Pusa-44, which produces 35-36 quintals per acre. It also yields 5 kg less rice during milling. This has led Punjab Opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa to criticize Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for promoting PR-126.

AI could ‘take control’ and ‘make us irrelevant’ as it advances, Nobel Prize winner warns
University of Toronto professor and Nobel Prize winner, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI,” is warning that the technology could develop and “make us irrelevant” without significant research into how to control it.Geoffrey Hinton, a British-Canadian professor at the University of Toronto, won the Nobel Prize in physics at the beginning of the month along with Princeton University researcher John Hopfield for work on machine learning and artificial neural networks.Speaking to Global News in a rare interview this week after winning the prestigious international award, Hinton pointed to the positives AI can bring but warned its rapid evolution could be existentially problematic.“I’m most concerned about the long-term dangers because those are the ones that people think are maybe just science fiction,” he said.“So, the biggest long-term danger is that, once these artificial intelligences get smarter than we are, they will take control –they’ll make us irrelevant.
