In rush to buy CPUs, Intel won’t be the only winner
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. It has been a sad few years for the venerable central processing unit. The one-time standard-bearer of the computing revolution has been pushed aside in recent years with the rise of generative artificial intelligence powered by graphics processing units, or GPUs, which are used for a lot more than graphics these days. But now attention is swinging back to the main brain of data-center computing, the CPU.

Mint Explainer | Why Nvidia is rewriting its trillion-dollar AI playbook
Mint explains.Nvidia launched a new generation of its Vera Rubin chips, and an all-new Nvidia Groq 3 chip—designed after it signed a $20-billion partnership deal with the founder of Google’s custom chip. These focus on power efficiency, thereby significantly reducing the cost of AI. Huang referred to ‘inferencing’ or the cost of running AI, which he said will fall drastically when these new chips hit data centres in three years. The new chips, for the first time, took the spotlight away from building AI and onto running it, suggesting that Nvidia sees AI at a stage of mass adoption.Training AI is becoming templatized, while running AI will bring the bulk of the demand for specialized chips.

Why the Nvidia-Groq deal is adding fuel to the debate on AI valuations
On Christmas Eve, Nvidia announced a deal to license technology, acquire assets, and hire key team members from AI chip startup Groq. Valued at $20 billion, the deal is one of the largest in the sector and has reignited concerns about a possible AI investment bubble and ‘circular financing’ by companies in the space. However, there are positive signs as well.

Last rights: The right to die with dignity should be upheld both in letter and spirit
David Michael Malone, my friend and mentor, elected to die with dignity on 24 November at the age of 71. The veteran scholar-diplomat—a former Canadian high commissioner to India—had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago and Alzheimer’s disease more recently. He was spared the pain but did not want to suffer the loss of memory and degradation of the quality of life that comes with Alzheimer’s. He invoked Canada’s right to die when he was still in control of his mental faculties and passed away a day after spending an enjoyable evening out with his close friends. As much as I will miss his long-distance friendship and sage advice, I was not unhappy to see him depart the way he did.

US adds export restrictions to more Chinese tech firms over security concerns
Trump administration on Tuesday added 80 companies and organizations to a list of companies that are barred from buying American technology and other exports because of national security concerns. The move, which targeted primarily Chinese firms, cracks down on companies that have been big buyers of American chips from Nvidia, Intel and AMD. It also closed loopholes that Trump administration officials have long criticized as allowing Chinese firms to continue to advance technologically despite US restrictions. One company added to the list, Nettrix Information Industry, was the focus of a 2024 investigation by The New York Times that showed how some Chinese executives had bypassed US restrictions aimed at cutting China off from advanced chips to make artificial intelligence.

The (Mona) Lisa effect: AMD's transformation since CEO Su's takeover
That was Mohammad Ali talking about his epic boxing match against Joe Frazier in 1974, known as the Thrilla in Manila, in which the two great fighters attacked and mauled each other for 14 rounds before Ali came up victorious. Writing for Sports Illustrated, Mark Kram, in his inimitable post-match reportage wrote: “A couple of miles away in the bedroom of a villa, the man who has always demanded answers of Ali, has trailed the champion like a timber wolf, lay in semi-darkness. ‘Man, I hit him with punches that’d bring down the walls of a city,’ said Frazier. ‘Lawdy, Lawdy, he’s a great champion.”

One reason why investors should not write off this AI stock that can challenge Nvidia
AI GPU researches, the last couple of years have been simply ecstatic for the company, which has even surpassed Apple in terms of market capitalization. Such is its craze that Apple is now trying to cut down its massive demand by bringing in collaboration with a different company for the iPhone maker's chips, according to a previous ET report. Meanwhile, there is another tech company, AMD, which is also exceedingly popular, and will be taking on Nvidia in a major way in the coming year, as per latest reports from market reports.

Meet Lisa Su: Time Magazine's 2024 CEO of the year, and the brain behind AMD, NVIDIA's biggest competitor
Lisa Su, the CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), its CEO of the Year, a recognition that highlights her transformative leadership and the remarkable turnaround of the company. Since taking over as CEO in 2014, Su has propelled AMD from a struggling competitor to a dominant player in the semiconductor industry, challenging the long-standing supremacy of Intel and, more recently, Nvidia. This award comes as the semiconductor sector is undergoing explosive growth, fueled by breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) and the growing demand for graphics processing units (GPUs)—both of which have been central to AMD's strategy under Su’s leadership.

The furious contest to unseat Nvidia as king of AI chips
Not far away in a north Austin high-rise, designers at Amazon developed a new and faster version of an AI chip called Trainium. They then tested the chip in creations including palm-size circuit boards and complex computers the size of two refrigerators. Those two efforts in the capital of Texas reflect a shift in the rapidly evolving market of AI chips, which are perhaps the hottest and most coveted technology of the moment. The industry has long been dominated by Nvidia, which has leveraged its AI chips to become a $3 trillion behemoth. For years, others tried to match the company's chips, which provide enormous computing power for AI tasks, but made little progress.
