India’s cement makers stare at bag shortage as West Asia war hits inputs
₹6–7 until recently, has now climbed to ₹11–12 due to a PP shortage.Due to the shortage, per tonne cost of cement will increase by roughly ₹60–80, considering 20 bags of 50 kg each per tonne, said Sourav Mitra, partner, Oil and Gas, Grant Thornton Bharat. At the heart of the issue is polypropylene (PP), used to produce woven cement bags. Refineries in the Gulf region are increasingly diverting feedstock such as propane and butane toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production amid supply uncertainties, tightening PP availability.Bag manufacturers are currently receiving only about 60–70% of their contracted PP chip supplies, according to a Motilal Oswal report dated 18 March.

Mint Quick Edit | A gulf too wide? Peace talks or not, brace for a US-Iran showdown over Hormuz
Mystery shrouds the prospect of official talks between the US and Iran to stop the war in West Asia, but reports have emerged of feelers from America in the shape of a 15-point ceasefire plan sent via Pakistan. The US reportedly wants Iran’s nuclear facilities dismantled, stockpile of enriched uranium handed over, nuclear-weapon ambitions renounced and missile threat capped, plus the Strait of Hormuz opened and more, all in lieu of relief from bombs and sanctions.Iran recently reiterated its right to enrich uranium while asking for reparations and a no-aggression commitment as conditions to stop its attacks. To this list, it later added a closure of all US military bases in the region and formal control over the Strait of Hormuz.

India needs women lawmakers: Fast-track the enacted quota to make faster economic gains
India’s government has signalled its intent to amend the Women’s Reservation Act of 2023, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, to fast-track its 33% quota of seats for women in Parliament and state assemblies. The sooner it’s done, the better. It would mark a major step in a long march towards the political and economic emancipation of women in the country.Women constitute almost half the population, but various estimates suggest women contribute less than 20% to GDP—based on models that crunch data on labour force participation, earning gaps, etc, and only capture what’s on the record.

₹1 lakh.”Santosh Joseph, founder of Germinate Investment Services, added: "People earlier were told what to do, but never the why. Now social media sells the benefits through these tips."But accessibility comes with risks.“The biggest issue is oversimplification,” Anooshka warned. “Wealth creation is complex, but social media often reduces it to quick tips.”There’s also the problem of context—what works for one person may not work for another.

NHAI faces ₹29k-cr hit as SC upholds extra compensation for highway landowners
₹29,000-crore liability for unsettled cases.A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan reaffirmed that landowners whose land was acquired for highway projects between 1997 and 2015 are entitled to extra compensation, known as solatium, and interest, even for past acquisitions. The apex court maintained that financial implications of the judgment, estimated at around ₹29,000-crore by the NHAI—cannot be a ground to deny fair compensation to landowners.“The grant of solatium and interest cannot be made contingent upon the magnitude of the financial burden. The Constitutional guarantee of just compensation cannot be diluted on that basis.

Meesho bets on AI voice assistant ‘Vaani’ to boost small-town shopping
Mint in an interview.“It’s not either-or, it’s both,” Kumar said, referring to the company’s approach of building for emerging AI-driven discovery channels while continuing to strengthen its core in-app shopping experience. On Wednesday, Meesho rolled out a conversational voice assistant, “Vaani” (Hindi for voice), aimed at making online shopping more intuitive for users who prefer conversational, offline-style interactions. The move reflects a broader shift in how the company is thinking about growth – not just in terms of adding new users, but also in how quickly those users become comfortable shopping online.“For us, this goes beyond accessibility. There’s an opportunity to reimagine the shopping experience itself," Kumar said."Such AI-led tools could act as an early enabler, especially for users in tier-II and tier-III markets who may need assistance with language, price comparison and navigation, helping expand the overall addressable market for e-commerce,” said Ankur Bisen, senior partner at The Knowledge Company, a consultant. However, he said that adoption is still at an exploratory stage, with even tech-savvy users continuing to discover use cases. The push comes at a time when e-commerce growth is becoming harder to sustain.

Iran war’s aftermath: Are US stock markets shaking off their ‘Trump Always Chickens Out’ phase?
Investors have grown accustomed to the idea that US President Donald Trump-induced shocks rarely last long, because, as the popular TACO acronym tells us, ‘Trump Always Chickens Out.’ But the American president’s decision to join Israel in starting a war with Iran has opened a geopolitical and macroeconomic Pandora’s box that may make a tidy walk-back impossible. Under the surface, financial markets are starting to take note. The ‘TACO regime’ in American stocks—under which every selloff was a buying opportunity—may be over. That thesis will now get a test after Trump postponed threatened strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure and power plants for five days, pending the outcome of what he said were talks with Iran to end the war.

Never waste an oil crisis: Time to go for market-oriented reforms in India’s oil and gas sector
In every crisis lies an opportunity, it is said. At the very least, today’s hydrocarbon crisis should re-open India’s forlorn debate on pushing oil and gas into a closer market embrace as a sector. Ever since we ran into supply snarls that began with yet another war in West Asia, shock-absorbers have been in focus, along with our import dependence. To be sure, this is no ordinary shock.
