Banks turn to bulk deposits to meet credit demand on tepid retail FDs
bulk deposit market aggressively in the last few months, resulting in the outstanding certificates of deposit (CDs) in the banking system rising to a decadal high. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data show that outstanding CDs in the banking system rose to ₹3.81 lakh crore — the highest since April 2014. These deposits are also not coming cheap as interest rates on these instruments have risen to a maximum of 8.22% which is also the highest since May 2019. In a report released on Monday, Nomura analysts pointed out that in February 2024, the monthly issuance of CDs for the banking system at ₹1.3 lakh crore was at a five-year high. «While CDs are a very small part of system deposits (2% of system deposits as of February 2024), the sharp rise in issuance is indicative of a continued resource crunch faced by banks. Borrowing costs via CDs are around 50 to 80 basis points more expensive compared to retail term deposits, with current 12-month CD rates being at 7.8% on an average across banks,» the analysts said. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

The state must find new ways to assert its authority online
In 1919, Max Weber delivered a lecture titled “Politics as a Vocation," in which he argued for the first time that the state has a monopoly over the use of physical force. He was looking for a way to justify the state’s use of force and chose to do so by elevating it to the level of a crucial feature of the social contract. In those days, authority was manifest through tangible expressions of control—institutions like the police and military, and coercive constructs like laws and regulations.

Jack Mintz: Alberta renews its quest for a holy grail — a healthy Heritage Fund
Alberta’s budget had lots of good news — unless you own an electric car, which will now be taxed at $200 a year. The provincial surplus is expected to be $5.6 billion this fiscal year, followed by a wafer-thin $0.4 billion next. Even though resource revenues are down, program spending isn’t being cut. It rises 3.7 per cent in fiscal year 2024-25.

Target launches new paid membership program in a bid to drive sales at a time of cautious spending
by inflation and high borrowing and credit card costs. The company reported its first annual decline in sales — 1.7% — in seven years. Target delivered a 58% increase in fourth-quarter profits and handily beat Wall Street expectations as the retailer cut costs and maintained a lean inventory during the critical holiday season.

Personal tax credits sound great, but they have a cost that quickly adds up
For tax geeks like me, the release of the annual Report on Federal Tax Expenditures is an exciting day, but I’m guessing most people don’t read this data-rich review that “reports on the estimated fiscal cost of federal tax expenditures, sets out the approach used in developing these estimates and projections, and provides detailed information on each tax expenditure.”

The real story behind Canada's lagging stock market
The Canadian stock market has been woefully underperforming its U.S. counterpart, but the reason has more to do with sector concentration — Canada is filled with banks and resource-related stocks while the United States is replete with technology and health care — than any commentary about how Corporate Canada is really doing.

DLF in talks to buy projects coming up at Aerocity in Delhi
DLF, the country's largest real estate developer, is in discussions with Bharti Realty to acquire under-construction phases of Aerocity in Delhi with a total development potential of 17 million sq ft, according to three sources familiar with the matter. About 5 million sq ft of the total portfolio will be retail, and once completed, the project is expected to generate an annual rental income of ₹5,000 crore. The first phase of Aerocity was also developed by Bharti, but later Canada's Brookfield Asset Management acquired a 51% controlling stake in Rostrum Realty, a real estate joint venture company in which Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Enterprises holds the remaining 49%. «GMR has the lease for the entire area until 2066, and when the bid was invited for the first time, DLF participated, but it was awarded to Bharti. It has again initiated the process to acquire the asset to further strengthen its rental portfolio,» said one person familiar with the matter.

Israel-Hamas conflict: Gaza truce talks extended by a day
Cairo talks have been billed as a final hurdle to reach the first extended ceasefire in the war between Hamas and Israel- a 40-day truce during which Israeli hostages would be freed and aid pumped into Gaza — ahead of Ramadan, which is due to begin at the start of next week. «The delegation will remain in Cairo on Tuesday for more talks, they are expected to wrap up this round later today,» a Hamas official told Reuters. Egypt's Qahera television also reported the talks had been extended for a third day, but said they were «facing difficulties». Earlier, senior Hamas official Bassem Naim told Reuters the militant group had presented its proposal for a ceasefire agreement to the mediators, and was now waiting for a response from the Israelis, who have stayed away from this round. "(Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu doesn't want to reach an agreement and the ball now is in the Americans' court" to press him for a deal, Naim said.
