Lessons on hyper-diversity from the people of Papua New Guinea
There are so many crises raging around the world that you can ask why I have chosen to bring the one in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to your attention this fortnight. So let me tell you the reason upfront: It is an example of why hyper-diverse societies can end up in deep trouble unless they develop the necessary social capital needed to govern themselves. The post-colonial state was carved out of an arbitrary chunk of the Melanesian archipelago (the region comprising the easternmost stretches of Indonesia and islands northeast of Australia).

How to allocate your annual bonus effectively
Hrishan has just received his annual bonus. In the past, he has spent similar windfalls frivolously, yielding no tangible benefits. Determined to be more purposeful this time, Hrishan is thinking of using the money to prepay some of his existing loans or following his friend’s suggestion to invest. He has a solid savings and investment strategy that he typically adheres to, but he’s also tempted to accelerate his goal of purchasing an Apple laptop, a long-standing aspiration. He has his eye on a new car as well. Hrishan is torn between the various options for using his bonus. Hrishan must assess whether he has factored in this extra income while drafting his budget and savings plan. If he has, he should adhere to the plan and not view the bonus as a supplement. However, if the bonus is indeed unexpected additional money, Hrishan needs to weigh his options and determine his course of action. While deliberating on the options, it would be prudent to transfer the money to a liquid fund to prevent impulsive spending. Repaying a high-interest loan would enable Hrishan to save on interest expense and release his regular income from EMI obligation. It is advisable to prioritise the settlement of credit card and personal loan debts, which typically attract higher interest rates, before considering partial repayment of home loan. If Hrishan perceives his current job as precarious or prefers flexibility in career, keeping his loan burden minimal might be wise.

View: India’s ‘no’ at WTO may just mean ‘not yet’
trade ministers gather at the World Trade Organization summit in Abu Dhabi this week, one of the villains will, as usual, be India. And, certainly, there’s some justice to the complaint that Indian negotiators are far too ready to block consensus at such confabs unless granted concessions on their own priorities. Saying “no” often comes too easily to them. But those priorities need to be viewed in the context of India’s fiendishly complicated domestic politics. This is a country the size of a continent, and achieving internal consensus on a drastic shift in policy is as hard — or harder — than getting agreement at the WTO. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the strongest, and most popular, leader India has had in decades. But he has always been particularly careful not to provoke widespread protests against his decisions. Although he hates to retract policies after investing political capital in them, he has twice in the past decade withdrawn legislation that enraged some of India’s farmers — a law early on in his tenure that would have made it easier to acquire agricultural land for industry, and a package of reforms in 2021 meant to liberalize India’s complicated farm subsidy system.

How to improve your team's performance: Use these 8 models
entrepreneur, you are either leading a team as a manager, or are accountable for some project or task where you require different people to work together for a successful delivery. A mental model is a summary or compressed version of how a thing works. Let’s consider how you can apply some of these models as a team leader. Occam’s razor The 14th century logician, William of Ockham, said, ‘Entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity.’ In other words, the simplest explanation or solution is usually the best one. As a team leader, your team brings to you tough problems, while time is usually your biggest constraint. Prioritise simplicity in approach. Encourage your team to use Occam’s razor to slice away layers of unnecessary complexity and to prefer simple hypotheses over complex ones. Investigate and implement work processes to reduce number of steps, training time and complicated decision-making. This will reduce errors and increase efficiency.

A plan to trim NHAI's debt mountain is cooking
₹3.4 trillion debt, two people aware of the plan said. The Centre may soon begin talks with NHAI’s long-term bond holders for the prepayment, the people cited above said on condition of anonymity. The move would allow NHAI to deploy more capital for strengthening the highway network, and bring down interest payments, which are taking up a big chunk of the government’s annual budget allocations.

Centre may junk special IBC framework plan for real estate
real estate for effectively granting greater protection to defaulting firms from bankruptcy proceedings is unlikely to feature in the amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) that the government is firming up, people familiar with the development said. After extensive deliberations, the government now reckons that such sector-specific mechanisms within the IBC could dilute the very essence of the bankruptcy law and prove to be counter-productive, they told ET. It is expected to amend the IBC after the general election in April-May. Some flexibilities, however, could be built into regulations from time to time to facilitate easier resolution in real estate, one of the persons said.

RIL plans to spend Rs 5,000 crore on Compressed Biogas Plants (CBG)
Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is planning to set up more than 50 compressed biogas (CBG) plants in the next two years at a cost of over ₹5,000 crore, according to two oil and gas industry executives aware of the development. At RIL's annual general meeting last August, chairman Mukesh Ambani had announced plans to set up 100 CBG plants in five years. CBG is a green fuel produced from waste or biomass sources. It has properties similar to compressed natural gas (CNG) and can be used for automotive, industrial and commercial uses. «RIL has tendered out over 50 compressed biogas plants to be set up in the next two years. It will shortly be floating a tender for the remaining plants,» said one of the executives. «The tenders have been given out for technology as well as engineering, procurement and construction.»

We the People versus They the State: Our rights matter
Writing in the Young India journal in March 1922, Mahatma Gandhi invoked the spirit of democracy to support voices of dissent within the Congress party: “Democracy is not a state in which people act like sheep. Under democracy individual liberty of opinion and action is jealously guarded." Modern democracy’s litmus test has been to expand the contours of individual liberty, within the limits of reasonableness and without infringing the rights of others, as new contingencies and technologies emerge.

India vs England Test match: Ranchi turns India’s way
Dhruv Jurel played out of his skin to 90 and whittled England’s first-innings lead down to only 46 and the spin ruled the roost. The sheer class of R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav was too much to resist and England had their worst batting day of this series, collapsing from 110 for 3 to 145 all out, leaving India with a target of 192 on a tricky pitch. When the day began, India were well behind the game, at 219 for 7 and staring at the real possibility of allowing England to take a sizeable lead.
