Nano businesses in India need special policy attention to flourish
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Are we looking at the Indian micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector through the wrong lens? According to government data, there were over 63 million MSMEs in 2015, of which over 60 million were micro enterprises. Of these micro enterprises, though, how many would be ‘nano’ businesses? The Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) for 2023 offers a contemporary indication.

Wall Street’s new era is off to rocky start as Fed sows doubts
Jerome Powell delivered exactly what traders up and down Wall Street had long hoped for: A big interest-rate cut that would justify this year’s steep rally in stocks and bonds as the era of tight monetary policy finally began to reverse. Equities, especially those of economically sensitive companies, briefly surged Wednesday, driving the S&P 500 up as much as 1%. Ditto bonds, while the prospect of easy money ahead initially pushed up speculative assets like crypto.

Tupperware lifts the lid on its financial problems with bankruptcy filing
Tupperware, the plastic kitchenware that revolutionized food storage after World War II and became inextricably linked to the parties where women seeking a measure of financial independence and fun in midcentury America sold the colorful products, has filed for bankruptcy. Tupperware Brands, the Orlando, Florida-based consumer goods company that produces the iconic line of containers, said it was seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after struggling to revitalize its core business and failing to secure a tenable takeover offer. Despite enjoying the same cultural ubiquity as Kleenex, Teflon and other brands whose trademarked names are eponymous with entire product categories, Tupperware has suffered from waning sales, rising competition and the limitations of the direct-to-consumer marketing model that once defined its success.

Banks step up vigil on fraudulent account opening via digital banking channels
digital banking channels. This is a practice usually followed by lenders while opening credit accounts, but is now being replicated for deposit accounts too, according to three people in the know. This comes at a time when banks are trying to weed out mule accounts —accounts which receive funds from illegal sources or through fraudulent transactions — from their systems. Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das had at a July 3 meeting urged bank chief executives to step up their fight against such accounts. “Some of the largest banks in the country could be processing around Rs 300-400 crore worth of fraudulent transactions through mule accounts on a monthly basis; for mid-tier banks, the amount could be around Rs 50-100 crore. This is becoming a serious problem for banks as digital payments become more ubiquitous,” a senior banker with a private sector bank said on the condition of anonymity.

Kim Jong Un calls for bolstering nuclear and conventional weapons after testing 2 types of missiles
North Korea said Thursday that leader Kim Jong Un supervised successful tests of two types of missiles — one designed to carry a «super-large conventional warhead» and the other likely for a nuclear warhead, as he ordered officials to bolster up his country's military capabilities to repel U.S.-led threats. The tests were apparent references to the multiple missile launches that neighboring countries said North Korea performed off its east coast on Wednesday, extending its run of weapons display as confrontations with the U.S. and South Korea escalate. The official Korean Central News Agency said that Kim oversaw the launch of the country's newly built Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 ballistic missile tipped with a dummy «4.5-ton super-large conventional warhead.» It said the test-firing was meant to verify an ability to accurately hit a 320 kilometer (200 mile)-range target, suggesting it's a weapon aimed at striking sites in South Korea.
