Coal Ministry plans pump storage projects on closed mines for hydro energy
Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries are planning to set up pump storage projects (PSP) on huge tracts of decoaled (closed mines) lands at their disposal. According to highly placed sources, the plan to set up such projects in the first phase will be finalised in a month's time, as the central government is quite bullish over such projects. Part of the coal ministry's ambitious plans is to diversify towards alternate sources of energy and through these pump storage projects, it plans to utilise solar energy to develop hydro projects. The power ministry earlier this year had come out with guidelines for PSP initiative and the coal ministry plans to develop such projects based on them, sources informed further. Under it, the CIL and its subsidiaries will use their closed mines, which have water stored in them, to lift it through solar energy. It will set up reservoirs over such closed mines where the lifted water will be stored. During night time, it will use the water lifted through solar energy to generate hydro energy.

Hurricane tracker: Tropical system heading towards Gulf of Mexico, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holds meetings
Gulf of Mexico, raising the likelihood of affecting Florida in the upcoming week, according to meteorologists. The forthcoming named storm in the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be Idalia (pronounced as «ee-DAL-ya»). The National Hurricane Center has expressed agreement with the potential development of this system, attributing an 80 per cent probability to its formation. The prevailing environmental conditions seem favorable for the gradual evolution of this system over the forthcoming days. As it progresses generally northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, it is anticipated that a tropical depression will likely emerge either late this weekend or early the following week. Dolce mentioned that although the Gulf waters possess ample warmth to facilitate the formation of a depression or storm, the potential hindrance of wind shear needs to be considered. Wind shear, denoting variations in wind speed and direction with altitude, typically acts as an inhibiting factor for storm development. With Florida situated in the prospective trajectory of the impending storm, precautionary measures are being initiated. Governor Ron DeSantis' official schedule confirmed his communication with Kevin Guthrie, Director of the Division of Emergency Management, on Thursday. Subsequently, DeSantis shared an update on X (formerly known as Twitter), directing attention to the state's emergency management team's readiness for the possible tropical system's movement across the Yucatán Peninsula. He advised residents to stay vigilant and prepare for potential impacts in the early days of the forthcoming week, directing them to follow @FLSERT for updates.

Number of micro irrigation schemes increased by 1.42 million between 2013-14 and 2017-18
micro irrigation schemes between 2013-14 and 2017-18, according to latest official census data released on Saturday. The sixth census of minor irrigation (MI) schemes showed that the number of both groundwater and surface water schemes have increased at the national level. Out of 23.14 million MI schemes examined, 21.93 million (94.8 per cent) constitute groundwater schemes, while 1.21 million (5.2 per cent) are classified as Surface Water Schemes. This underscores the substantial reliance on groundwater resources for irrigation needs. There has been a delay in release of the 6th census due to COVID-19 and work on the 7th census has already been started, a senior official said. The census data revealed that Uttar Pradesh claims the largest share of MI schemes, closely trailed by Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Defined as structures within either groundwater or surface water categories with a Culturable Command Area (CCA) up to 2,000 hectares, these minor irrigation schemes have surged by about 1.42 million, according to the latest census. The sixth census records a total of 23.1 million schemes compared to 21.7 million in the fifth census, signifying a 6.9 per cent increase in groundwater schemes and 1.2 per cent in surface water schemes at the national level. The census differentiates between groundwater and surface water categories, including dug wells, shallow, medium, and deep tube wells.

Digital will enable cross-border collaboration on tech innovation and R&D: Roshni Nadar Malhotra
Roshni Nadar Malhotra, chairperson of HCL technologies, said in the national capital on Saturday. Speaking at a B20 panel on technology, innovation and R&D, she said, “One of the issues with global technology and skilling is that innovation is very specific to countries,” adding that the challenge is taking solutions to scale. Nadar-Malhotra, who also co-chairs the B20 Taskforce on Digital Transformation, said the B20 Task Force on Technology, Innovation and R&D’s recommendation for such a digital platform aligns with that of her own task force’s focus on bridging the digital divide, addressing digital literacy and the skills gap, enterprise transformation of MSMEs with a digital toolkit, and fostering digital trust. Developing future skills will be key and has boded India well since it invested in R&D in information technology since the 1970s, she said. This attracted international companies to come and leverage its capabilities.
