Thailand's fugitive ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra returns to jail from years in self-exile
Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday set foot on home soil for the first time since 2008, returning from self-exile to a Bangkok jail just hours before his allies attempt to form a government after weeks of political deadlock. Thaksin, the billionaire figurehead of the populist juggernaut Pheu Thai Party, fled abroad 15 years ago before he was jailed in absentia for abuse of power, two years after the military overthrew him and accused him of corruption and disloyalty to the powerful monarchy, which he denied. Thaksin appeared briefly with family members at a private jet terminal at Bangkok's Don Mueang airport, smiling and waving to hundreds of ecstatic supporters, before he was escorted by police to the Supreme Court, then to a prison to serve a term of eight years. As he emerged from the airport wearing a black suit, red tie and yellow lapel pin bearing a royal insignia, Thaksin bowed to the crowd in a traditional «wai» greeting before kneeling to pay respects before a portrait of the king and queen. «For the past 17 years, you felt isolated, lonely, troubled and missing home but you persevered,» said Thaksin's sister Yingluck, whose three-year stint as prime minister also ended in a coup, a criminal conviction and self-exile. «I will be strong and persevere.

Generative AI to augment jobs, not destroy them: ILO study
ILO) said, adding that the impact on employment would be more on high-income countries and among females. According to the ILO study, Generative AI and Jobs: A global analysis of potential effects on job quantity and quality, most jobs and industries are only partly exposed to automation and are more likely to be complemented rather than substituted by the latest wave of Generative AI, such as chatGPT. “Therefore, the greatest impact of this technology is likely to not be job destruction but rather the potential changes to the quality of jobs, notably work intensity and autonomy,” it said. As per the study, 5.5% of total employment in high-income countries is potentially exposed to the automating effects of the technology, whereas in low-income countries, the risk of automation concerns only some 0.4% of employment. The study further shows that the potential effects of Generative AI are likely to differ significantly for men and women with more than twice the share of female employment potentially affected by automation. “This is due to women’s over-representation in clerical work, especially in high and middle-income countries,” it said, adding that one result of Generative AI could be that certain clerical jobs may never emerge in lower-income countries. According to the study, clerical work has the greatest technological exposure with nearly a quarter of tasks considered highly exposed and more than half of tasks having medium-level exposure. On the other hand, the potential for augmentation is nearly equal across countries, suggesting that with the right policies in place, this new wave of technological transformation could offer important benefits for developing countries, the ILO said. According to the ILO, there

Vikas Khemani, Founder, Carnelian Capital Advisors, says: “I am fully convinced that India will see disproportionately large flows in times to come. In the last two years, we lost close to $40 billion as the interest rates were rising in US and emerging markets and so there was the outflow. But that is all set to reverse.

‘All Americans to get Covid-19 booster’: Joe Biden as new wave looms

Appropriate legal action will be taken against staffers having links with terrorism: J-K LG
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday defended dismissal of government employees who support terrorism and said the administration would not hesitate in taking appropriate legal action against such persons. Referring to Article 311 of the Constitution which deals with dismissal, removal or reduction in rank of civil employees in the Union or state governments, he said the article was included «to take stern action against those who are a threat to the nation». «It is not important what anyone is saying. Employees having links with terrorism will have to face stern action,» Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. The L-G was responding to a question about PDP president Mehbooba Mufti slamming the Jammu and Kashmir administration for «selectively terminating Kashmiri employees» from service by labelling them as «terrorist sympathisers». Mehbooba Mufti's reaction comes a day after the Jammu and Kashmir Bank sacked its chief manager Sajad Ahmad Bazaz for allegedly being a «threat to the security of the state». In a post on X, the former chief minister wrote, «Selectively terminating Kashmiri employees by wrongfully dubbing them as terrorist sympathisers and pro-ISI has been normalised. The accused isn't given a chance to prove his innocence with the government acting as judge and jury. This hooliganism is meant to frighten Kashmiris into submission.»
