US election 2024 results for House of Representatives: Donald Trump, Republican Party get major boost
Republican Party has won a majority in the US House of Representatives, media projected Wednesday, completing their clean sweep of Congress, which will hand President-elect Donald Trump vast legislative power. After more than a week of vote counting, CNN and NBC projected that the Republicans had reached the 218 seats needed to retain their majority in the 435-seat lower chamber, having already secured control over the Senate. «It is a beautiful morning in Washington. It is a new day in America,» said House Speaker Mike Johnson, who held a press conference to celebrate victory Tuesday before the result was official.

MFIs reduce lending rates as RBI voices concerns
microfinance lenders have reduced lending rates in the past couple of months amid heightened regulatory scrutiny on the pricing policy adopted by these financiers that service the bottom of the consumer pyramid. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was conducting a scrutiny over the past six months or so, and that culminated into the decision to bar errant lenders from doing business from October 21 for charging «excessive» interest rate spreads over their cost of funds. Both Arohan Financial Services and Asirvad Micro Finance — the two NBFC-MFIs penalised — have submitted fresh plans to the regulator. Arohan promised to reduce rates by about 200 basis points while Asirvad said it would lower rates by around 300 bps once they are allowed to resume business, people familiar with the matter said.

10% correction a norm, not an exception; looking for undervalued, under-owned & underperforming stocks: Jyotivardhan Jaipuria
Jyotivardhan Jaipuria, Founder & MD, Valentis Advisors, says he typically tries to buy stocks following the three-U philosophy. He buys the undervalued, under-owned and underperforming stocks. So, for him, the valuation of food valuation and q-comm stocks has been a big constraint as at these valuations, the margin for safety is quite low. So, even though growth will come, there is not that much margin of safety. What is happening in the market? Can a conclusion be drawn that it is the disappointment on the earnings front that is leading to such a downtick in the markets? Or do you think there are a lot of moving parts that one needs to watch out for? Jyotivardhan Jaipuria: I guess the starting point was valuation. The valuations have been expensive for some time. A lot of us have been expressing concerns about that. So, when valuations are expensive, you need one trigger. The earnings were a little disappointing, that was one trigger. Also, probably the fact that China did a stimulus and there was a revival in interest in China. So to that extent, people are taking money off the table in some of the other countries that have done well. So, those would be the two points to think about in this correction.

Is equity market heading for a prolonged slowdown? Vetri Subramaniam answers
«It can work it off by coming down sharply, as it has done a few times in the past or it can just go nowhere for a while and allow the earnings to catch up because as a result valuations will automatically correct as those earnings come through,» says Vetri Subramaniam, CIO, UTI AMC. For the first time, there is real pain and agony to be felt in this market after many-many years. Do you think we have taken a decisive turn in equity markets and we could be in for a long winter? Vetri Subramaniam: This business of predicting whether it will be winter, summer, spring is not really my forte. And after 25-30 years of doing this, I have come to the conclusion that nobody can really forecast this stuff beforehand. I will just stick to what I have been telling you and maybe that may have been our last conversation as well. The markets were pretty pricey in terms of valuations and history has taught us that when the market is pricey in terms of valuations, there are two ways in which it can work it off.

Trump risk: The rupee could get caught in the crossfire of a currency
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Nothing has consumed more ‘little grey cells’ than discussions on the United States presidential election, the contenders and their impact on the fate of the global economy after this “mother of all US elections." Even with the election now out of the way, economic uncertainty and volatility are here to stay, given fractures in society (and thus the polity) across the developed world. The focus thus far has been on foreign portfolio flows, interest rates, the policy stance of central banks and at times their liquidity management.

Nowhere to hide, keep your powder dry and sit on the sidelines till Trump takes office: Andrew Holland
Andrew Holland, CEO, Avendus Capital Public Markets Alternate Strategies LLP, says we might get relative outperformance but at this point, just keeping your powder dry is probably the best thing to do until some of the scenarios play out after Trump assumes office. Hospitality, and traveling will be a key feature at least for next year or so. The airlines look okay. Some kind of premiumisation is happening in pockets and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are the place to be there. Finally, electronic manufacturing (EMS) is a great area to be in the long term. Those three themes are in play, but if markets go down, then these stocks will go down as well. What is spooking the global markets right now? Do you think the excesses of the Trump rally are getting shaken off a little? Andrew Holland: Yes, you are bound to see a little bit of slowdown in the index after its rise but one thing that has clearly happened is that all the attention and all the focus is now on the US and that is what we have seen in terms of the markets not just the equity market, but obviously the currency and to some extent crypto as well. I do not see that stopping. I think that is going to be the kind of theme as Trump puts together his administration and America first kind of comes out of this.

Trump said the new department «will provide advice and guidance from outside of government,» signaling the entity would operate outside the confines of government.

ET In The Classroom: Large-cap funds
fixed deposits should stick to large-cap funds as these schemes invest in companies with long track records and strong managements, which works well in the long term. WHAT IS A LARGE-CAP MUTUAL FUND? As per regulatory guidelines, a largecap company is a listed company ranked from 1st to 100th on the Indian stock exchanges in terms of market capitalisation. Hence for a fund house, a large-cap scheme needs to invest at least 80% of its corpus in large-cap companies, with the flexibility to invest the remaining 20% in other companies as per the discretion of the fund manager.
