CFA urges clarity on UK, EU and US sustainable fund classification
According to the CFA's How to Build a Better ESG Classification System report, the ESG frameworks put in place across the three regions present challenges due to lack of focus on observable features, as well as the presence of unclear definitions or incomplete logical structures. Chris Fidler, head of global industry standards at the CFA Institute, argued «there is much disagreement about how to categorically define and identify ‘ESG funds'», and added that a better way would be «to have different evaluators classify the same sets of funds» using «three observable features». The first...

HUL's scoop: In a hot market, all scream for ice cream
Hindustan Unilever (HUL) which comes with a large market share as it assesses the prospects of its ice-cream business. HUL sells ice-cream brands such as Kwality Wall's, Cornetto and Magnum. The companies eyeing HUL's business expect the consumer goods market leader would not just spin off the business but also eventually sell it, ET has reported. RJ Corp that operates quick-service chains KFC and Pizza Hut, handles bottling for PepsiCo and sells the Cream Bell ice-cream, the MMG Group which runs McDonald's in North and East India and is also a franchise bottler for Coca-Cola, as well as the local unit of Nestle SA are among the companies open to evaluating HUL's ice-cream business, depending on the independent committee's decision, as per an ET report based on information from people familiar with the matter. On Friday, the company said it was setting up an independent committee to evaluate «the way forward» for the ice-cream business.

OPEC again lowers 2024, 2025 global oil demand growth view
OPEC on Tuesday cut its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2024 reflecting data received so far this year and also trimmed its expectation for next year, marking the producer group's second consecutive downward revision. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in a monthly report said world oil demand will rise by 2.03 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024, down from growth of 2.11 million bpd it expected last month. There is a wider than usual split between forecasters on the strength of oil demand growth in 2024, partly due to differences over China and more broadly over the pace of the world's transition to cleaner fuels. The reduction still leaves OPEC at the top end of industry estimates.

Reeves urged to implement CGT and inheritance tax changes to address £22bn fiscal hole
In its Revenue and reform report released today (10 September), the think tank said its three proposed reforms could raise over £20bn while still meeting the ‘triple tax test' of increasing tax system efficiency, not breaching manifesto commitments and allowing those with the «broadest shoulders» to take the most significant hit. CGT in particular «should be a key focus» for the chancellor, according to the Resolution Foundation, by aligning marginal CGT rates for shares with dividend tax rates, as well as taxing capital gains from property like wages. «In addition, there should be ...

Vibhor Singhal explains why Nuvama is so positive on IT stocks
Vibhor Singhal, Director, Nuvama, says whenever a new tech trend pops up, industry experts seem to predict the end of Indian IT, almost like they're writing its eulogy. But time and again, these companies manage to rise from the ashes, leveraging these disruptions for growth. Gen AI will likely follow the same path. The next couple of years will be a testing ground filled with proof of concepts and smaller initiatives. However, as technology evolves and becomes more mainstream, and as businesses get a grip on its advantages and drawbacks, Indian IT firms will rebound and reclaim their market presence. The basic sectoral stance that you have on IT is doubling down on a positive stance. What is making you so positive? Vibhor Singhal: Our stance on the IT sector has been positive for the past two years. We have maintained that the demand environment remains quite strong, which is visible in the deal flow that we have seen over the past two years, despite the macro headwinds the sector has witnessed. What was missing in the sector was the deal flow to revenue conversion, which of course had multiple points, two of them majorly being the new deals being awarded were delayed in execution and the older deals that were there in the pipeline of the companies, the discretionary part of that was being put on hold.

Expect further downside in the dollar in coming months: Khoon Goh, ANZ
Khoon Goh, Head of Asia Research, ANZ, says every time the Fed embarks on a fresh easing cycle, the dollar tends to depreciate heading into not only the first rate cut but the second rate cut as well. So, I think there is a further downside in the dollar to come in the coming months. The dollar index continues to be fairly volatile. In fact, from those 106 levels, it is down to 101. Even the Indian rupee for that matter had weakened quite a bit and is almost at the lowest point. What is your sense as to where the dollar is headed next? Khoon Goh: Overall, I am still bearish on the US dollar. I believe the dollar is clearly on a downtrend on the back of expectations that the Fed will start its easing cycle next week. And when we look at history, every time the Fed embarks on a fresh easing cycle, the dollar does tend to depreciate heading into not only the first rate cut but the second rate cut as well. So, I think there is a further downside in the dollar to come in the coming months.

Robust private sector investment taking place in various sectors: Vinayak Chatterjee
«So, thermal; renewable; transmission; distribution with smart meters; pump storage; airports, Jewar, Navi Mumbai, these are all happening sectors,» says Vinayak Chatterjee, The Infravision Foundation. The private sector capex is not starting. We all are waiting, waiting, waiting and watching. Why is that? Vinayak Chatterjee: Actually, it is strictly not true that private sector capex is not happening. Let me outline for you the sectors where robust private sector investment is happening. So, I really do not know why you say that. Take the case of power, there is an uptick in investments by private sector in new green field as well as picking up distressed thermal coal assets and pumping more money into them.

3 sectors Vinayak Chatterjee is bullish on for long term
«Various companies are implementing massive projects across the country on green. So far as green is concerned, the discourse has actually changed to 24 by 7 green power, which means the conversations are now about storage,» says Vinayak Chatterjee, The Infravision Foundation. My next question is perhaps based on what you also flagged off right now, which is that new sectors are taking over. Old sectors or traditional sectors are taking a backseat. But the analyst in Bombay also focuses on two big sectors, which is steel and cement. Now, if the new sectors are taking over, old sectors from a private sector capex standpoint, they could take a backseat. So, do you think indirectly, it could have impact on steel and cement demand also, which should grow ideally when the economy is booming, but which may not grow because of new capex? Vinayak Chatterjee: Now, unfortunately, I have to agree with you again.

With ‘Founder Mode,’ Silicon Valley makes micromanaging cool
People like Elon Musk and Steve Jobs at times seemed to have a je ne sais quoi that allowed them to act and behave as leaders of their companies in ways that would have tripped up mere mortals. This past week, Silicon Valley put a name to it: “Founder Mode." It’s a term coined by Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator, an influential startup incubator in the San Francisco Bay Area.

D-Street investors add bearish bets on PFC and REC, rush to defensives
Traders have built bearish derivative bets on state-owned power sector lenders Power Finance Corp (PFC) and REC promoted by the reversal in the recent bullish momentum in these stocks. On Monday, Power Finance Corp dropped 3.7% to ₹525 and REC declined 2.6% to ₹592. In last five days, the stocks fell around 5% each while the benchmark Nifty shed 1.3% during the same period. Analysts see these stocks falling further as investors are shifting money from recent favourites like PSUs and power stocks to the so-called defensive sectors.
