Heavy rains claimed 49 lives in Gujarat over week, 37,000 rescued
NDRF and Army, officials said on Wednesday. A deep depression triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall in several areas of Gujarat between August 25 to 30. The depression, formed over the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, gradually moved into the Arabian Sea (which later turned into cyclonic storm Asna), said State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey. During this period, 49 persons died in rain-related incidents, such as lightning strikes, wall collapse, and drowning in flood waters, he told reporters at Gandhinagar-based State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC). «Among the 49 deaths, the kin of 22 have already been paid Rs 4 lakh each as compensation as per norms. A sum of Rs 1.78 crore has been disbursed to the owners of 2,618 livestock that perished,» Pandey said, adding that Gujarat so far received 108 per cent of its average annual rainfall.

Don't worry, your mobile phone won't give you brain cancer, says new WHO report
World Health Organization (WHO) has found no link between mobile phone use and an increased risk of brain cancer. The analysis, covering studies from 1994 to 2022, concluded that despite the rise in mobile phone usage, there hasn't been a corresponding increase in brain cancer incidence. This review was conducted by 11 investigators from 10 countries. The review assessed the effects of radiofrequency used in mobile phones, as well as in TVs, baby monitors, and radar. Co-author Mark Elwood, professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, said, «None of the major questions studied showed increased risks.» The researchers investigated cancers of the brain in both adults and children, as well as the pituitary gland, salivary glands, and leukemia. They looked into risks linked to mobile phone use, base stations, or transmitters, and occupational exposure.

Is a significant market correction on the cards? Rohit Srivastava answers
«I will not rule out something bigger at this point of time. It does look, at least looking at Bank Nifty that there could be further weakness. So, we are keeping our odds open for a further correction on the downside,» says Rohit Srivastava, Founder, Strike Money Analytics. We have finally snapped the 14-day gaining streak that we have been seeing. Does Nifty charts indicate any more downside from here on level or this is just a temporary blip that we are looking at? Rohit Srivastava: So, my thought is that the Nifty is sort of done with this move for the time being. September typically brings in some volatility into markets and you also have the US election season which creates a lot of noise as well.

Next 6 months, expect power financiers, insurance & MF companies to beat banks: Ajay Bagga
Ajay Bagga, Market Expert, says the rural economy coming back is the bigger story. For banks, the issue is twofold. One is there is going to be a NIM compression given that there is a deposit war out there and that sustainable funding is still being sought. A big chunk of the financial savings are going into the markets through various instruments like mutual funds, insurance, provident funds, NPS, or direct investments. Bank deposits are hurting. They have to increase rates and that is causing a NIM compression. Long-term, banks will do well as they are the suppliers to a growing economy. But in the next six months, one can find much better returns in power financiers or insurance or mutual fund companies. How are you looking at the entire IT space, given that we have seen an outperformance continuing into this month? What do you expect the remainder of the year is likely to bring for the IT space? Ajay Bagga: IT is looking good. There is continued buying in IT and we expect better results coming in. The AI part, was the cause for worry and we had seen the employee headcount going down as well. Now we are seeing several end uses of AI coming in. The semiconductor companies, as the suppliers of the AI chain, were doing very well and the end user companies were looking at end-use cases, and in the centre were our IT companies.

Is the market showing signs of fatigue? Deven Choksey answers
«Till now as well the larger focus is on the insurance space and whenever the opportunity is available in the insurance companies, definitely the buying is emerging into them,» says Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd. What is it that you are feeling about the market? Is it showing any signs of a fatigue? I mean, when you look at some of the individual high HNI concentrated names and the kind of fall that they have had from their previous peak, some of them are down even 30 odd percent or so. What is the feeling that you are getting about the market right now? Deven Choksey: Overall, I think the market direction is very-very clear. Anything which is available at a comfortable discounted valuation, as I call it as, the market is not waiting for latching onto that kind of an opportunity. So, obviously, the important aspect here would be to buy on dips, that is very-very clear and obvious. Now, where the actions are being centred at this point of time, our understanding is that the majority of the interest continues to remain in the BFSI space.

Pernod Ricard puts up Imperial Blue whisky for sale
₹5,000 crore from the sale, one of the three people said, while a second person said the sale plan was initiated three weeks ago. Pernod’s plan to sell Imperial Blue comes two years after rival Diageo sold a bunch of low-margin brands including Haywards, Honey Bee and Romanov, reflecting multinational liquor makers' preference for premium brands that sell less but earn more. Goldman Sachs declined to comment, while spokespersons for Pernod Ricard and Goldman Sachs did not respond to emailed queries.

Paralympics 2024: Don’t treat us differently
Asked what was wrong, Kathuniya said, “I am not happy. If I tell you that I was regularly throwing 47-48m in practice, you will think I am lying. But that’s the truth and I should have done much better here. I am not happy with my effort. I did not win the silver here; I lost the gold.” “You just don’t want people to come and say ‘arre kya hua hai, silver toh aaya (what happened, you got silver)’. Silver aane ke liye yahan nahi aaye the, gold jitne ke liye aaye the (I didn’t come here to win silver, I came to win gold).” His disappointment was palpable. It was interesting to see someone not celebrating a silver medal.
