A German far-right party leads exit polls in one state election and is roughly level in another
far-right Alternative for Germany won a state election for the first time Sunday in the country’s east, and was set to finish at least a very close second to mainstream conservatives in a second vote, projections showed.A new party founded by a prominent leftist also made an immediate impact, while the parties in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s unpopular national government obtained extremely weak results.Projections for ARD and ZDF public television based on exit polls and partial counting showed Alternative for Germany winning 32-33% of the vote in Thuringia — well ahead of the center-right Christian Democratic Union, the main national opposition party, with about 24%.In neighboring Saxony, projections put support for the CDU — which has led the state since German reunification in 1990 — at 31.7%, with AfD on 30.6-31.4%.“An openly right-wing extremist party has become the strongest force in a state parliament for the first time since 1949, and that causes many people very deep concern and fear,” said Omid Nouripour, a leader of the Greens, one of the national governing parties.Other parties say they won’t put AfD in power by joining it in a coalition. Even so, its strength is likely to make it extremely difficult to form new state governments, forcing the parties into exotic new coalitions.

Dipan Mehta, Director, Elixir Equities, says that typically, after a few quarters of downbeat numbers, you do see an upswing in sugar numbers as well and valuations are reasonable. In markets like this, investors are looking for good quality, low PE stocks, and this is one segment that certainly fits that criteria.

Which sectors of the market still offer value for investors? Abhay Agarwal answers
«They are still at about 20 times FY26 earnings at the index level. So, I would not call it that this valuation is so far stretched that there are no opportunities. At the same time, are the valuations at a level that you can say with a lot of certainty that anything you buy will make you money? I do not think we are there also,» says Abhay Agarwal, Piper Serica. Given the fact that we are hitting fresh record high now on the markets once again, do you believe that the market valuations is now looking a bit stretched or do you think that it is not that expensive yet? Abhay Agarwal: If we look at by traditional standards, the valuations are definitely on the higher side. I do not think the valuations or the index, when we look at valuation, we typically talk about the valuation of the Nifty Index stocks, the 50 stocks. So, they are not in the exorbitant range yet.

Bayer Leverkusen beaten in the Bundesliga for first time in 15 months by Leipzig
Bayer Leverkusen lost a Bundesliga game for the first time in 15 months when Lois Openda scored twice in a 3-2 comeback win for Leipzig on Saturday. Under coach Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen has made crucial late goals a speciality. It briefly seemed like that might happen again when the referee went to review a possible penalty in the 86th minute after Leipzig's Castello Lukeba and Leverkusen's Patrik Schick made contact. The referee decided against the spot kick and Leverkusen lost to a German opponent for the first time since May 2023 after 35 Bundesliga games unbeaten, including its entire title-winning 2023-24 season. «It's hard, it's bitter,» Alonso told German broadcaster Sky. «I don't think we deserved to lose today.»

'First-of-its-kind' space travel reality series to get $50 million from Banijay Asia
Banijay Asia plans to invest $50 million (over Rs 400 crore) in a «first-of-its-kind» reality series tentatively titled 'Race to Space', making it India's most expensive television show, sources close to the development said. The investment will cover the licensing fee to the US-based Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) as well as production and talent costs, they added. Industry watchers said 'Bigg Boss Hindi', hosted by Bollywood star Salman Khan, is currently the country's most expensive non-fiction show, with budgets exceeding Rs 150 crore. «Given the scale and scope of the project, this is not just a documentary series or just a reality series — it is a 'space programme',» Banjay Asia CEO Deepak Dhar said. The new reality format will revolutionise competitive reality television and rekindle interest in space exploration, he added. Expressing optimism about the show's success in India, SERA co-founder Joshua Skurla cited the interest in last year's Chandrayaan-3 moon landing live-stream.

View: Latest GDP numbers do a better job of deciphering the past than of predicting the future
data analytics, predictive tech and AI, data points are valuable not so much for what they tell us about the past but for how well they can predict the future. By that yardstick, Q1 GDP numbers released by NSO last Friday for the quarter ended June 2024 are likely to fail the test. In a world dogged by uncertainty, where black swan events are seemingly no longer the exception, macroeconomic numbers like GDP are incredibly hard to predict. The past is no guide to the future. No one foresaw the pandemic or, further back in time, the Global Financial Crisis, both of which saw GDP growth collapse dramatically. Sure, these were catastrophic events. But, thanks to geopolitics, there are just too many unknown unknowns in the world today to expect GDP estimates for a single quarter to give us more than a very rough idea of how growth is likely to pan out in future.

The reason old Bollywood movies like 'Gangs of Wasseypur' and 'Maine Pyar Kiya' are back in theaters
big screen to surprising success — from the 2012 hit "Gangs of Wasseypur" full of blood, gore and revenge to the romantic «Laila Majnu» that had a lacklustre run when it was first released in 2018. According to trade experts and exhibitors, this is a good way to fill up the halls and recover money as those who loved watching these movies or missed them at the time of their release seem keen for the big screen experience. «It's beneficial for exhibitors, and whoever holds the right to the film also earns money. For instance, when 'Laila Majnu' and 'Rockstar' were released, they didn't do well but this generation loved these films. »The average occupancy for 'Laila Majnu' was 40 per cent all over India. In some properties in Mumbai, it registered over 80 per cent occupancy," trade analyst Atul Mohan told PTI, adding that he is confident that «Gangs of Wasseypur» will be immensely loved.

Enforce traceability, user privacy norms on internet calling and messaging apps: COAI
traceability and user privacy rules on WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Meet as well as other calling and messaging apps along with telecom operators as such platforms provide similar services using internet network, industry body COAI said. Telecom operators want the government and regulator to enforce message traceability and user privacy rule on these apps to curb spam and illegal activities as majority of messaging traffic has moved to data networks from SMS, COAI said. In a recent direction, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has mandated telecom operators to enhance message traceability. The regulator has mandated that the trail of all messages from senders to recipients must be traceable from November 1, 2024. Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and others, said that while the telecom service providers are working jointly with the Trai and the other stakeholders on this aspect, the OTT (over-the-top) communication services, without the requisite security and regulatory checks, is a growing concern in this regard.

Auto sales decline for second straight month in August
Sales of passenger vehicles in the local market declined for the second straight month in August, on a high base, and with carmakers reducing dispatches to rationalise stocks at dealerships. According to industry estimates around 350,000-355,000 cars, sedans and utility vehicles were dispatched from factories to dealerships last month, which is a decline of 1.7-3% over 361,123 vehicles sold in August 2023. Automakers in India mostly report wholesale dispatches to dealers and not retail sales to customers. EC has started working for BJP: Congress criticises Election Commission for postponement of Haryana Assembly polls
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Sunday slammed the Election Commission for postponing the Haryana Assembly polls and accused the poll body of working for the BJP. «Not only ED and CBI but now Election Commission has also started to work for the BJP. It's very unfortunate that the Election Commission, for a political party's demand, has pushed the date back and it shows that the BJP is afraid of the defeat in Haryana,» Tagore told ANI. «The unpopular government in Haryana which is led by BJP will be defeated with a huge margin in each constituency and the Congress Government will be formed in Haryana with a clear verdict from the people,» he added.

Manu Joseph: Nari Hira was a success only Bombay could have given India
When I do the math now, I realize that many people whom I considered old when I was 21 were actually only in their 40s and 50s. Nari Hira, for instance, who I thought was the most flamboyant old man in India was in his mid-50s when I first met him in 1995. I had just arrived from Madras and Bombay was a foreign land that was years ahead of the India I knew.
