oil and gas giants including IndianOil, ONGC and GAIL (India) have been slapped fines for the third straight quarter for failing to meet listing norm requirements of having the requisite number of directors on their board. Stock exchanges have fined oil refining and fuel marketing giant Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), explorers Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL), gas utility GAIL, and refiners Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) a cumulative Rs 32.5 lakh, stock exchange filings showed. In separate filings, the companies detailed the fines imposed by the BSE and NSE for either not having the requisite number of independent directors or the mandated women director in the third quarter ended December 31, 2023, but were quick to point out that appointment of directors was done by the government and they had no role in it. The companies had faced fines for the same reason in the previous two quarters as well.

How to trade Paytm amid wild swings. Anand James shares his strategy
Notwithstanding the wild moves seen in shares of Paytm in the last three weeks following the RBI ban on Paytm Payments Bank, Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, sees a trading play in the stock. “Our upside objective is in the region of Rs 500-550, but would be mindful of the chances of major collapse, should we not get above Rs 430. An aggressive stance would be to have Rs 390 as the downside marker,” he said. Edited excerpts from a chat: Following new peaks made by Nifty this week, how cautious would you be in the next week ahead of the monthly F&O expiry? What are the key levels to watch out for? Anand James: As we step into the last week of February series, rollovers have started to gain momentum in Energy, Metal and Chemical stocks, with 85% of F&O stocks appearing to witness long buildup since last expiry and 53% on a week on week basis. Meanwhile, 11% of F&O stocks saw Short buildup since last expiry and 42% on a week on week basis. Long addition was visible in Cement, Capital goods, Oil, Auto and Pharma stocks since beginning of this expiry.

Demat account nomination: Because it is all about valuing what you have created and earned
consultation paper by Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) points out that 70% of the demat accounts with a single holder have opted out of appointing a nominee. This observation from the Sebi has triggered a discussion about the importance of nomination in an investment. Let us understand why nomination in investments is important and how it can be done wisely: The Sebi has been vocal about investors appointing a nominee to their investments or to clearly ‘opt out’ of the nomination if they are not keen to nominate anyone. In the past, the Sebi has stated that failing to mention a choice would lead to freezing of investments held in mutual fund folios as well as demat accounts. Deadline set for this exercise has already been extended three times and the revised deadline now is: June 30, 2024.
