Moody's downgrades Israel's credit rating due to Hamas conflict
Moody's downgraded Israel's credit rating Friday due to the impact of its ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza, lowering it by one notch from A1 to A2. In a statement, Moody's said it had done so after assessing that "the ongoing military conflict with Hamas, its aftermath and wider consequences materially raise the political risk for Israel as well as weaken its executive and legislative institutions and its fiscal strength, for the foreseeable future." The ratings agency also lowered its outlook for Israel's debt to "negative" due to "the risk of an escalation" with the far more powerful Lebanese militant group Hezbollah that operates along its northern border.

'Disruptions pose many challenges but offer opportunities too'
Global disruptions may pose many challenges to how the world operates but they also offer considerable opportunities, the Prime Minister of Guyana Brigadier Mark Anthony Phillips said, giving the example of India's Vaccine Maitri that helped vulnerable countries at a time of need and propelled domestic manufacturing as well. Guyana, which has produced legendary cricketers like Clive Llyod and fast bowling debutant Shamar Joseph who propelled the West Indies to a stunning Test victory over Australia last month, has close diplomatic relations and a unique tie to India. The Prime Minister shared that 40% of Guyana's population comprises people of Indian origin. In his address at the summit, Phillips made a case for innovative and collaborative approach to meet common challenges being faced by nations across the world. «In the simplest of terms, global disruptions essentially change how the world operates. In today's world, disruptive forces such as technology, globalisation, and economic and demographic change, are constantly occurring,» the PM said.

'Important legislative biz coming': BJP issues whip to MPs to ensure presence in Parliament
BJP has issued a whip to its MPs in Lok Sabha as well as Rajya Sabha to ensure their presence in Parliament on Saturday on account of some «very important» legislative business, which will be tabled for discussion and passage. Though there was no official word on the nature of the business on the last day of the last session before the Lok Sabha polls, some party leaders said there is a possibility that it may touch the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended the consecration ceremony at the temple on January 22. The event generated a nationwide appeal and the BJP believes that the temple issue will help create a positive atmosphere in its favour in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Pramod Amthe is selective in midcaps; betting on 4 pharma stocks
Pramod Amthe, Head of Institutional Equity Research, InCred Capital, says “in recent times, private banks have been raising deposit rates to mobilise deposits which can be a pressure on NIM in the short term. So, the earlier sign to look at is some stability in deposit rates or the easing of deposit rates, so the cost of funds can be relatively favourable for the private banks. Till then, the PSU flavour may remain for some time to come.” I want to start by talking about the pharma pack as a whole, that is the defensive side. Everyone is looking at that as well. A lot of moves came in from Sun Pharma's side. On the smaller side, we have Orchid Pharma, which is seeing a move as well. How are you viewing pharma as a pack and is there anything specific that you are finding attractive? Pramod Amthe: If you look at the recent trends, the pricing erosion in the US seems to be stabilising. Shortages are happening and hence pricing comfort is coming back. The better way to play there is Sun Pharma and Aurobindo which we like. The other trend is domestic outlook for the growth for pharma seems better for the second half (H2) as compared to the first half (H1). The proxy there which we are trying to play is Torrent and Ajanta.

Jharkhand CM Champai Soren transfers first installment of Rs 74 crore to 24,827 housing scheme beneficiaries
Champai Soren on Friday hit out at the BJP for allegedly conspiring to destabilise the Hemant Soren-led JMM government ever since it came to power in 2019. Criticising the BJP for lacking substantial issues to present to the public, he claimed that they resorted to foul tactics to undermine the government's stability. The CM emphasised that the mandate of the people was in favour of Hemant Soren, who initiated various welfare measures despite the economic slowdown due to the pandemic. «People's mandate was in favour of Hemant Soren, who formed a popular government and started delivering the goods even though economic activities came to a standstill for two years because of the pandemic,» the chief minister said after disbursing the first set of installments of the Abua Awas (housing) Yojana to beneficiaries here.

Manmohan Singh on Thursday from Rajya Sabha — and, for all purposes, political life — the country marks the exit of a figure who managed to hold on to the paradoxical tag of practitioner of 'decent politics'. This was no mean feat in a career that started in academia, moved to policy, and orbited into politics.
