National Asset Reconstruction Company of India (NARCL) has proposed to acquire the debt of Jaiprakash Associates from banks for ₹10,000 crore, making it the largest offer made so far by the government-backed asset reconstruction company (ARC) that started operations just over two years ago. If a majority of lenders sell their debt, ARC will acquire the cement, hospitality, real estate, fertiliser and construction businesses of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL) — a flagship company of the Manoj Gaur-promoted Jaypee Group, said people with knowledge of the matter. In fiscal 2023, NARCL acquired 62%, or ₹9,234 crore, of Jaypee Infratech's debt, offering lenders a 39% recovery following an uncontested Swiss challenge auction.

The department has also initiated an e-campaign to inform taxpayers to compute their advance tax liability correctly and deposit the due advance tax on or before March 15. «On the basis of analysis of the taxes paid so far during the current financial year, the department has identified such persons/entities where payment of taxes for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25) is not commensurate with the financial transactions made by the persons/entities concerned, during the said period,» the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT said in a statement issued Sunday. The development was in the offing for a while with the UBT camp claiming earlier in February that its MLAs like Waikar were under pressure to switch sides to the Shinde camp due to the probes by the central agencies. Waikar’s entry into the Shiv Sena would hurt the UBT faction as he was not just close to Uddhav but also had business interests with the Thackeray family. Waikar had entered into buying several land parcels with the Thackerays which BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had been raising. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu should introspect and realise who is responsible for the current situation, said the nine MLAs, including three independents and six disqualified Congress MLAs, who voted in favour of the BJP in the recent Rajya Sabha polls. Enforcement Directorate has registered a money laundering case to probe an international drugs trafficking racket that allegedly involves a former functionary of the DMK, official sources said Sunday. The case has been filed by the federal agency under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) taking cognisance of a bunch of FIRs, including the NCB case where 36-year-old Jaffer Sadiq was arrested on Saturday for his alleged involvement in smuggling about 3,500 kgs of pseudoephedrine with a street value of about Rs 2,000 crore. The NCB said Sadiq's links with Tamil and Hindi film financers, some «high profile» people and related to «political funding» were under its scanner. The NCB is expected to soon summon a senior DMK party functionary in connection with two transactions of Rs 7 lakh made by Sadiq, according to sources in the anti-narcotics agency.
