India's wait for uniform charging ports gets longer
His comment comes amid a bitter battle between electronics giants Apple and Samsung over the timelines for implementation of the new charging port regulation. Analysts have advised caution saying any hasty decision by the government could impact India's smartphone exports. According to officials aware of the details, while there is consensus on the proposal to adopt USB Type-C as the standard charging port, there are differences over the timeline for implementation. «Samsung is pushing for implementing the charging mandate along with European Union (EU) timeline for smartphones, which is December 28, 2024; Apple suggested an EU+6 months' timeline for new models and an EU+18 months, if existing models are also included in the mandate,» said an official privy of the details. Other smartphone makers such as Vivo, Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Realme also proposed EU+6 months' timeline for smartphones during the meeting, the official added.

Retailers ask cos to cut 4G phone price
retailers have urged the top smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Samsung to slash prices of 4G smartphones and push affordability schemes and marketing campaigns to help clear piling inventory of 4G handsets. Demand for 5G smartphones, particularly in the sub-₹15,000 segment, is expected to surge with multiple new launches lined up in December. «The advent of 5G technology, coupled with affordable pricing and robust government initiatives, has created a palpable demand among consumers for the latest technological offerings,» the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) said, in similar but separate letters to Oppo, Vivo, Samsung, and Xiaomi. «This transition, however, has left retailers with an inventory of 4G products that are facing challenges in the current market environment,» AIMRA said, considering the fast-paced transition to 5G technology and the resultant shift in consumer preferences. The retailers asked the brands to take proactive measures in addressing the presence of 4G stocks in the market, through implementing permanent price drops, consumer schemes, affordability initiatives, higher margin on 4G stocks, and strategic marketing campaigns. This, to spur some last-minute demand for 4G smartphones in a market swiftly being dominated by 5G.

In 2 years, 70 per cent smartphone users may switch to 5G: Industry executives
smartphone users expected to wield a 5G handset buoyed by falling prices and countrywide network coverage, industry executives said. Top smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and Samsung have set in motion plans to flood the India market with 5G smartphones at aggressive price-points. Their partner retailers have unveiled a slew of price cuts and offers to quickly clear out 4G smartphone stocks to make way for the next-gen gizmos. Industry body India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) estimates the country’s installed base of 5G phones to jump more than two-fold to around 500 million by December 2025 from around 150 million in end-December 2023, and make up over 70% of the total smartphones base. “The growth will be driven by consumers demanding faster connectivity options, coupled with a gradual decrease in 5G smartphone prices, especially with models above Rs 13K and those below Rs 10K becoming predominantly 5G-enabled,” Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of ICEA, told ET. Nationwide 5G rollouts by telcos and advent of companion devices and HD content too will help drive mass appetite for 5G smartphones, industry experts and handset market trackers said. The signals are already there. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme and Samsung have dropped prices of their older 4G handsets as well as the 5G devices launched earlier this year.
