India's smartphone market hit by massive price hikes: Vivo, Samsung, Oppo rates jump up to 40%.
Between US President Donald Trump’s war in west Asia and a chip shortage triggered by Nvidia’s focus on supplying artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips, India’s top three smartphone brands Vivo, Oppo and Samsung, as well as Realme, Xiaomi and Nothing have emerged as the first casualties in a once-thriving market—increasing smartphone prices by as much as 40% across their portfolios. The price hikes are significant: smartphones make for India’s single-largest electronics category, with sales of over $43 billion through 2025. Since the pandemic in 2021, India has struggled to revive its smartphone market due to a stagnation of new features and an increasingly saturated market. While companies so far managed single-digit revenue growth on the back of rising premium phone sales, the current market conditions come as a double whammy: consumers are putting phone purchases on the backburner due to rising prices of basic needs such as cooking gas even as the rise in prices does nothing to aid the ailing market.Vivo, Samsung and Oppo accounted for 47% of the 152 million smartphones sold in the country last year, according to data from market researcher International Data Corp.

Xioami 15 Ultra: All about the camera, but is that enough?

Assisted driving tech in focus after fatal electric car crash in China
autonomous driving features. A Xiaomi SU7 sedan drove into a concrete guardrail on an expressway in eastern China late Saturday at a speed of around 60 mph, according to a post on Xiaomi's official social media account. On Tuesday, local media published reports about the collision and ensuing fire, which killed three college students, along with pictures of the charred remains of the vehicle. Xiaomi said the driver had deployed the company's Navigate On Autopilot, an assisted-driving feature, while going around 70 mph on the expressway. The car was traveling at that speed when it reached a roadblock, because a portion of the road was under repair with traffic diverted into a different lane.

Xiaomi eyes $5.3 bn ride on Hang Seng bulls
Xiaomi Corp kicked off a share sale that may fetch as much as $5.3 billion, capitalising on a surge in the Chinese company's stock price to help raise funds to expand its electric-vehicle business. The Beijing-based company is offering 750 million shares at HK$52.80-54.60 apiece, according to terms of the deal. That's a discount of 4.2% to 7.4% versus the stock's last close in Hong Kong. Investor demand met the size of the offering by Monday evening, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because they're not authorised to speak publicly about the matter. The offering, which comes weeks after EV giant BYD Co's $5.6-billion fundraising, builds on what's shaping up to be a bumper year for share sales in Hong Kong. After years of slumping, the city's benchmark stock index is among the world's best performers this year, fuelling optimism for a rebound in deals in the Asian financial hub.

Apple’s iPhone 16e is outselling iPhone SE but won’t reverse China slide
iPhone SE released a few years ago, but won’t be enough to reverse a China slide, according to analyst firm IDC. The market tracker found sales of the iPhone 16e were 60% stronger in its opening three days versus the iPhone SE from 2022. But that won’t be enough to alter the forecast that Apple’s sales in China will decline about 2% overall this year. “The competition from Android will be even stronger, strengthened by the national China subsidies which will benefit Android significantly more than Apple,” said Nabila Popal, IDC senior director. The new $599 iPhone 16e replaces the $429 iPhone SE, making the challenge in China tougher when it comes to fending off budget Android alternatives. The device includes only one rear camera, limited base storage and insufficient AI features, making it a tougher sell in the region. The Chinese government has set aside 300 billion yuan (in excess of $41 billion) for subsidies to stimulate the consumer economy. Those extended to smartphones in recent months and have helped the likes of Xiaomi Corp. and Vivo expand their sales. Apple is working on bringing its Apple Intelligence suite to Chinese consumers as early as the middle of this year, Bloomberg News has reported. Still,Apple could make up for the sales weakness via other models in the region. “We need to keep in mind that these would likely still be only a small portion of Apple’s volumes given that many consumers in China place an emphasis on ‘face’ — not wanting to be seen as having a lower-priced iPhone,” IDC’s Bryan Ma said. Looking beyond China, he expects the 16e to make up as much as a fifth of iPhone sales in India in the second half of the year.
