The global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed five million, with an expert describing the situation as “a defining moment in our lifetime”.
Less than two years into the global health crisis that has caused havoc with economies and health systems around the world, the toll of officially recorded deaths from COVID-19 passed five million on Monday.
According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, total deaths stood at 5,001,817 on Monday morning, with 246,811,481 cases recorded worldwide.
