banana is registering price hike. The prices of bananas have rise to Rs 100 per kg in Bengaluru. The surge in its price is attributed to fluctuations in supply and demand.
As per a ToI report, the city officials blames intricate dynamics behind the recent surge. Bengaluru heavily relies on Tamil Nadu for a substantial portion of its banana supply. Secretary of Bengaluru APMC, Rajanna, told TOI, «Two primary varieties dominate the city's consumption — Elakkibale and Pachbale.
The equilibrium between demand and supply fluctuates. Currently, arrivals from Tamil Nadu are limited. Around 30 days ago, the Binnypet market received 1,500 quintals of Elakkibale; today, that number stands at 1,000 quintals.» The city's supply network also extends to Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Chikkaballapura, Anekal, and Bengaluru Rural, according to Bengaluru APMC.
«Tamil Nadu sources its supply from Hosur and Krishnagiri,» Rajanna added. With inter-state supply constraints, wholesale prices for Elakki bananas are currently Rs 78/kg, and Pachbale are at Rs 18-20/kg. Post factoring in transportation and marketing expenses, retail prices have surged to Rs 100 and Rs 40, respectively.Anticipated Seasonal DemandAs festivities such as Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Durga Puja loom ahead, the demand for bananas is anticipated to surge.
Hanumantharayappa, proprietor of Byraveshwara Banana Shop in Nagasandra, told ToI, «Our supplies hail from various parts of Karnataka, with Shivamogga being the chief contributor. As festivals approach, the mounting demand outpaces our production. The challenge lies in replenishing stock, and we foresee a substantial price escalation in a matter of days.»Middlemen at Play?Insights from farmers suggest middlemen and traders might
