Arijit Singh made headlines during his recent concert in the UK by declining to perform his protest song "Aar Kobe," which he wrote in response to the tragic rape-murder of a doctor in Kolkata. The song has become a rallying cry for protests following the incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month.
While performing, Singh was approached by a fan requesting that he sing «Aar Kobe.» In a video shared widely on social media, he responded, «This is not the place. People haven't come here to protest. They have come here to listen to me. That's my job. And what you are saying is my heart. This is not the right time and place.» He emphasized the importance of the concert atmosphere, adding, «If you really feel about it, go to Kolkata. Gather some people; a lot of Bengalis are here. Go on the street.»
Singh further clarified the song's status, stating, «That song is not monetised. It will never be monetised. Anyone can use it.» He then resumed his performance, continuing with «Ramta Jogi,» a classic from the 1999 film Taal.
«Aar Kobe,» translating to «if not now, then when,» addresses issues of women's safety and dignity, urging listeners to take action. Since its release, the song has amassed over 2 million views on YouTube within three weeks. In its description, Singh's official channel expresses a desire for the song to become «a voice of hope, a plea for justice, and a catalyst for change.»
