While Jammu has arguably been a bigger gainer of the removal of special status as the power balance with the Valley has ostensibly been reduced, there are many issues that plague the minds of people living in the lower altitudes. High unemployment and lack of jobs commensurate with the education levels is a big worry for the youth. Many young people that ET talked to said they and their peers are working in other parts of the country or going to Singapore, Australia, Canada and the European countries for low-end jobs.
Agniveer has also caused a lot of resentment. “Earlier there used to be so many boys running on the roads early in the morning to practice for joining the army but now you hardly see any youngsters doing so. There is not much interest in becoming an Agniveer,” said Narendra Sharma, the PDP candidate in RS Pura, Jammu.
Jammu Division shares a long border with Pakistan and the troubled history of the state has over the years encouraged the youth in this area- unlike some parts of Kashmir- to look for a job in the defence forces. But a short tenure as an Agniveer and uncertainty of employment afterwards now makes them think twice.
The drug menace- both smuggling and consumption by the youth- is a major issue in Jammu. “Chhitta”, the colloquial term for drugs, is easily available and the unemployed youth are its biggest victims.
