Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has sought comments from stakeholders regarding the authorisation that would be granted for setting telecommunications, satellite or cloud-hosted telecommunications networks.
The 166-page consultation paper, comprising 37 questions, follows a reference from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) dated July 26, seeking to get recommendations on terms and conditions, including fees or charges, for authorisation to establish, operate, maintain or expand telecommunications network as per the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
Subsequently, the DoT sent another letter, requesting the authority to consider an authorisation for satellite communication network under section 3(1)(b) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
The authority has already given its recommendations for service authorisation and through the latest paper, it will delve upon the network authorisation. The Telecommunications Act provides for different terms and conditions of authorisation for different types of telecommunication services and telecommunication networks.
In its reference, DoT said keeping in view the increasing use of non-terrestrial networks including satellite communication networks in provisioning of fixed satellite services, including VSAT services and mobile satellite services, Trai may consider an authorisation for satellite communication network and what should be the terms and conditions for that.
