Opposition to ideas exists and has always existed. Buddhism has been a very popular doctrine since the 19th century. Some have seen it as revolutionary, some as non-violent, wise, and contemplative. But it has its share of opposition around the world. In China, Taoist philosophers argued that Buddhism was a corrupt doctrine propagated by their teacher Laozi amongst barbarians to remove their hostile rebellious tendencies so that they could be brought into the Chinese way. In Japan, the Shinto traditions argued that the bull-headed god Gozunu used pestilence and epidemics to tame the contemplative Buddha, reminding him that nature's force is far more powerful than meditation. In the Tibetan Bon tradition, the belief is that Shendra Nivo lived 23,000 years ago on Mount Meru, descended to human parents, and was born with 33 traits. He spread the corrupt doctrine of Buddhism to weaken the people of Jambudvipa and taught the correct doctrine of Bon to the Tibetans.
Even Hindus who opposed Buddhism said that Buddha was the ninth avatar of Vishnu, born to spread a false doctrine amongst asuras. Eventually, however, we find how Buddhist ideas mingle and merge with Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan and Hindu ideas. A mixing happens. Not a replacement.
