Mahesh Langa of a key role in a multi-crore Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) fraud involving hundreds of shell companies. The ED claims to have uncovered a network of 200 shell entities used to fraudulently claim input tax credit (ITC) without any exchange of goods or services, a TOI report stated.
Mahesh, The Hindu’s Gujarat correspondent, is accused of using his position to engage in blackmail, settlements, and illicit business, reportedly earning millions through these activities. His name also appears in a case involving leaked government documents, with an FIR filed in Gandhinagar.
A recent search by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch at Mahesh's home uncovered Rs 20 lakh in cash, expensive jewelry, and property documents. Mahesh Langa's annual salary was just Rs 9 lakh. In Mahesh Langa's last 2022-23 income tax return, his own income is only Rs 9.48 lakh and his wife's income is Rs 6.04 lakh, which means his 1 year income is about Rs 15.5 lakh and Rs 20 lakh cash has been found at his house.
Additionally, it has been revealed that Mahesh and his wife have frequently stayed in luxury hotels.
According to the ED, one of the shell companies, Dhruvi Enterprises, was allegedly created with falsified documents to obtain GST registration. This entity reportedly issued fake invoices to 12 different companies, including DA Enterprises, which then claimed fraudulent ITC from the GST department.
