markets Fighting Strategy Sustainability wellness rights America got the world driving. Now it’s going home
Carl Benz might have invented the automobile, but it’s the United States that got us to drive them. The relentless export of American cars and car culture put the world on the road in the 20th century. By the 1960s, Ford Motor Co. had plants in almost every major European country, as well as Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, India, Israel, Peru, Pakistan, South Africa, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. Right now, it’s passing that baton to China with barely a fight. The US car industry that emerges will be smaller, less influential — and, eventually, less profitable and financially sustainable.

markets COST Progressive Action economy country COP29 week one ends in deadlock as divisions stall climate action progress
COP29 summit concluded in Baku without significant breakthroughs, as deep divisions between developed and developing nations stalled progress on key issues like climate finance, trade measures, and equitable responsibility for climate action. India, representing the G-77/China and BASIC blocs, demanded accountability from wealthier countries on unmet financial commitments. The G-77/China bloc reiterated the call for $1.3 trillion annually in climate finance, with an emphasis on grants and concessional funding to avoid burdening vulnerable economies already grappling with the impacts of climate change. «Loans make up nearly 70 per cent of climate finance provided so far. This is unacceptable and places undue pressure on developing economies,» an Indian negotiator had asserted, urging developed nations to move away from debt-inducing mechanisms.

Foxconn has ordered the hiring agents that help recruit iPhone assembly workers in India to remove age, gender and marital criteria as well as the manufacturer's name in job advertisements, according to three people familiar with the matter and almost a dozen ads reviewed by Reuters. The moves follow a Reuters investigation published June 25, which found that Foxconn excluded married women from jobs at its main India iPhone assembly plant, though it relaxed the practice during high-production periods. Foxconn, which employs thousands of women at the iPhone factory at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, outsources recruitment of assembly-line workers to third-party vendors. These agents scout for and screen candidates, who ultimately are interviewed and selected by Foxconn.

markets FIVE economy Trade performer rights Why should one buy into banking when the economy is slowing down? A Balasubramanian explains
A Balasubramanian, MD & CEO, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, says historically, if you want to build a portfolio, the best time to buy in the market is when the worst of possible news keeps coming in. That is when the market starts pricing in the news. Therefore, you will be able to get a price that you want to buy. Second, when economic growth comes in, the reward could be high. Given that our ambition of becoming a $10-trillion economy has not been taken away in the last three-four months, and nothing has changed, as long as that remains strong and credit growth is a driver of economic growth, banking sector remains a bet. Are there any opportunities arising at this point in time because everyone is worried about going ahead and catching the falling knife? A Balasubramanian: Yes, of course, if you take the fundamentals of some of these sectors, whether it is capital goods or auto sector, fundamentally, nothing is changing except cyclical nature. Even metal sectors have fallen.

markets UPS Target Analysis trends Trade Experts CLSA’s Laurence Balanco sees Nifty at 37,000 plus by end of this decade
Laurence Balanco, CLSA, says the upside target for Nifty from the structural moves that we have seen historically for the Nifty is over 37,000 as an ultimate upside target towards the end of this decade. Balanco says there is still further upside and that is why they want to look at opportunities to increase exposure. But they are not seeing the evidence to jump back in. Just over 37,000 is the longer term target for the Nifty in this phase of the bull market off the COVID lows. Which is that one asset class or trade that could be a multi-year short? For example, if someone said they would go short in China, three years ago, that turned out to be the trade of the century. What is that one trade you would say that I would remain short? Laurence Balanco: That is a question without notice. It is off the top of my head on a structural basis. In the near term, the most vulnerable market that we have highlighted has been the Euro Stoxx 600. This market peaked in April, May. This year, there was a dip into the August lows. We had a rally back to those April, May highs where we have stalled out and rolled over. So, it does look like a space that relatively underperforms. And then we have also got this potential double top pattern.

markets Provident Analysis Food Trade Experts rights December rate cut could spark market revival: Chakri Lokapriya
«So, consumers and companies need to see the other side of the coin, that is a cut of rates. So, while food inflation is high, I think if there is a December cut, that would provide one of the catalysts,» says Chakri Lokapriya, Managing Partner, RSB LLP What is your view? Are we in for a long winter or we are nearing the end of this decline? Chakri Lokapriya: Nifty is down about 10%. Earnings are down, if you look at the various sectors saw 10% to 15%. And on the other hand, some of the PSU stocks are down 40-50%. So, at that perspective, I do not think there is much downside, but what is clearly needed is some kind of a catalyst for earnings to revive upwards. Now that catalyst can come from RBI rate cut. I know people are talking about it being postponed to February, but RBI has increased rates by about 250 basis points, very short period of time. So, consumers and companies need to see the other side of the coin, that is a cut of rates. So, while food inflation is high, I think if there is a December cut, that would provide one of the catalysts.

markets FIVE security Election gatherings politician Defeat Ajit's faction in a 'big' way: Sharad Pawar to voters
Sharad Pawar has cautioned his detractors that they should mess with anyone but him and appealed to voters to not just defeat those who rebelled under Ajit Pawar, but «defeat them big» in the Maharashtra assembly polls. Addressing a rally at Madha in Solapur district on Sunday ahead of the November 20 state polls, Sharad Pawar recounted an episode of defection that led to him losing the post of leader of opposition in the assembly almost five decades ago and his resolve that led to the defeat of all those who had backstabbed him. «In the elections of 1980, 58 persons won polls from our party and I became leader of opposition. I had gone abroad and when I came back I realised Chief Minister AR Antulay saheb had done some miracle and 52 of the 58 MLAs had switched sides. I lost the post of LoP,» he said. «I did nothing (at the time). I just started reaching out to people across the state and worked hard for three years. In the next elections, I fielded young candidates against all 52 MLAs who had left me. I am proud of the people of Maharashtra that all 52 who left me were defeated,» he told the gathering.
