markets economy students War country classical Schools Trump will claim victory in the next couple of weeks and then reverse the policies he has introduced: Ramesh Damani
Ramesh Damani, Member, BSE, says like Lyndon Johnson on Vietnam, Donald Trump will just declare victory in the next couple of weeks and then change all the policies that he has introduced, saying that, oh, my policies have been achieved, everyone has come to the negotiating table, everyone is scared of America. He will declare victory because he will never admit loss. He will declare victory and the rest of the world will move back to the regime we were in. How should the world look at the tariff announcements by the US administration? Old school economists are saying that this is against the classic economic theory. This means inflation comes back, de-globalisation starts, and that is going to lead to serious contraction in the US economy. Ramesh Damani: There is a movie out now called The Emergency, and I remember that as a young student in 1975, the then Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi imposed the emergency.

But on March 21, what started as a routine shift took an unexpected and disheartening turn. According to a report from KTLA, toward the end of his shift, Ortiz was serving a couple who, at first, seemed no different from any other travelers passing through the bustling airport restaurant. He greeted them with his usual warmth, took their order, and provided the kind of attentive service he had perfected over the years. But something about their demeanor felt off. “The way they were looking at me—you can tell when something isn’t right,” Ortiz later recalled.

CEO economy wellness Trade President country cover BMW, Mercedes-Benz call for free trade based on low tariffs, reduced trade barriers
BMW and Mercedes-Benz in India on Thursday called for more free trade based on low tariffs and reduced trade barriers, saying it will be a win-win situation for all. As part of reciprocal tariffs on about 60 countries to counter higher duties on American products imposed globally, the US on Wednesday announced 27 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India saying New Delhi imposes high import duties on American goods. However, autos and auto parts as well as steel and aluminium articles, already subject to Section 232 tariffs at 25 per cent, announced earlier in US President Donald Trump's order on March 26, 2025, are not covered in the latest order. «We always subscribe and we always propose that there should be more free trade agreements with the countries. UPS economy Research Trade Experts country US reciprocal tariff may erode India's GDP by up to 50 bps: Experts
EY Chief Policy Advisor D K Srivastava said, «the maximum adverse impact on India's GDP growth will not be higher than 50 basis points. As per our earlier projection, the GDP growth estimate for current fiscal was 6.5 per cent, which may go down to 6 per cent without retaliation». Standard Chartered Bank Head — India, Economics Research, Anubhuti Sahay said an effective 20 per cent tariff increase on Indian exports to the US ( after considering the exempted goods) in our view is likely to adversely impact India's GDP by 35-40 bps, ceteris paribus. «However, the final impact would depend on the trade deal agreement between India and the US along with how each country negotiates/ retaliates on the proposed tariffs,» Sahay said. She said while a loss in India's GDP is inevitable on higher tariff rate imposition, India is likely to be relatively less impacted amongst the Asian economies as other countries have been hit by higher tariff rates than India or run a larger trade surplus with the US especially in the non-exempted sectors. According to EY's Srivastava, the US tariff hikes could have a favourable impact on the country's exchange rate as the dollar could come under pressure in the US with a likely rise in inflation.

Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and called for urgent reforms in the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) to ensure better support for vulnerable sections of society. The Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, in its eighth report on MGNREGA that was tabled in Parliament on Thursday, highlighted that delays in wage payments continue to be a significant issue, affecting lakhs of rural workers dependent on the scheme for livelihood. It noted that despite digital advancements, workers often face long waiting periods for their wages, exacerbating financial distress. The report urged the government to address systemic bottlenecks, improve fund allocation, and ensure timely payments. Additionally, the panel expressed concerns over the declining budgetary allocation for MGNREGA and the increasing demand for jobs under the scheme. It recommended revising the wage structure to match inflation and strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms to protect workers' rights. The report also pointed out issues such as the lack of proper job card issuance, the need for better social audits, and the importance of including more women beneficiaries in MGNREGA employment.
