Citi Forbes actress Nazi Jewellery Auction of Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten's jewellery with Nazi connection cancelled
Christie's has cancelled the second auction of jewels belonging to an Austrian billionaire, whose German husband made his fortune under the Nazis, following «intense scrutiny, it said Friday. The auction house held a first controversial online and in-person sale in Geneva of part of the large stash of more than 700 jewels in May, and had been scheduled to hold a second round in November. But in a statement it said „Christie's has taken the decision not to proceed with further sales of property from the Estate of Heidi Horten.“ With just a portion of the collection sold, the auction eclipsed previous records set by Christie's in sales of properties that belonged to actress Elizabeth Taylor in 2011 and the „Maharajas and Mughal Magnificence“ collection in 2019, both of which exceeded $100 million. Hopes had been high for similar results from the second round. But following an initial report in the New York Times, Christie's sent a statement to AFP confirming that it had cancelled the second round, acknowledging that „the sale of the Heidi Horten jewellery collection has provoked intense scrutiny.“ »The reaction to it has deeply affected us and many others, and we will continue to reflect on it," it said. A large number of Jewish groups had asked Christie's to halt the initial Horten sale in May, describing it as «indecent», and demanding that the auction house do more to determine how much of it came from victims of the Nazis. The extraordinary collection belonged to Heidi Horten who died last year aged 81, with a fortune of $2.9 billion, according to Forbes. A report published in January 2022 by historians commissioned by the Horten Foundation said Heidi Horton's husband Helmut Horton, who died in Switzerland in 1987, had

COST Stubborn inflation in Germany, Spain keeps ECB on data alert
Germany and quickened in Spain, offering European Central Bank officials a partial picture of the region's price pressures as they judge whether to raise interest rates again. The numbers published Wednesday point to the possibility of a robust outcome when the eurozone report is released the following day data policymakers have highlighted as crucial to their September 14 decision. Consumer prices in Germany, the region's biggest economy, rose 6.4% in August from a year earlier, exceeding the median estimate of 6.3% in a Bloomberg survey of economists. While inflation in Spain was far lower, at 2.4%, that result marked a second month of acceleration, and an underlying measure stayed far higher. Any evidence of stubbornly strong consumer-price growth may yet convince the ECB to raise borrowing costs. Officials are weighing if underlying pressures are too strong to risk a pause, or whether a weakening economy can brake inflation without further tightening. That appraisal augurs what appears for now to be a cliffhanger decision in two weeks' time. Hawks such as Austria's Robert Holzmann have already signaled they may push for a hike, while his Finnish colleague Tuomas Valimaki insisted on Tuesday that the outcome is “totally open.”

FIVE country social Austria may be planning to cut social benefits for immigrants
Austria has stirred controversy by suggesting that immigrants who have been in the country for less than five years should have their social benefits reduced. This proposal, like Denmark's approach, aims to link full social welfare benefits to the duration of residency and a specified employment period, regardless of nationality or residence status. The plan involves assessing which benefits would be subject to these criteria through an ongoing review process. According to Austria Press Agency, Minister Raab's rationale is to make the labor market, rather than the welfare system, the driving force for immigrants to establish themselves in Austria. She has pointed out that the current immigration model needs adjustment. To assist skilled workers considering relocating to Austria, Raab envisions establishing a national coordination office. This office would offer support for family integration, German language courses, childcare, and recreational activities, with the intention of expanding this service across the country. However, the Greens, ÖVP's coalition partner, have officially rejected Raab's proposals. Green MP and integration speaker Faika El-Nagashi emphasized that cuts to existing social benefits are not a topic of discussion for them. El-Nagashi stressed that the crucial aspect is the necessity for support, rather than the duration of stay or level of employment in Austria.
