Key European economy Austria sets up Startup Bridge with India
Austria, an export-oriented economy, is increasingly targeting South Asia and SE Asia with India topping the list to export its products including machinery, chemical and pharmaceutical products, automobile related items, said Martin Kocher Austrian Minister for Labour and Economy. “Austria is focusing on South Asian and SE Asian markets in a big way since the Russian market has been closed following the war. India is of special interest to Austria given its complementarities in the field of economy. Austria also serves as the gateway to the German speaking markets of Europe,” Martin Kocher Austrian Minister for Labour and Economy told ET during his weeklong visit to India for the Raisina Dialogue.

Red Bull does give you wings: Despite investigation, Christian Horner is in driver’s seat
Formula 1 season began this week and there was Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull Racing, still leading his team as it begins its bid for a fourth consecutive championship. Horner was also front and center a week ago at Red Bull's launch of its 2024 car — a virtual highlight reel of the success Horner has built since he became team principal in 2005. Make no mistake, the longest-tenured team leader in the F1 paddock knows how to win: Red Bull has won six constructors' championships and seven drivers' championships under Horner. But as he continues with «business as normal» — Horner's own words at the launch last week — nobody else can figure out how he has remained on the job during an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct that parent company Red Bull announced on Feb. 5.

Capitalism varies across as well as within individual countries
There is a large literature on the varieties of capitalism seen around the world. In their Introduction to the much-cited volume on Varieties of Capitalism (Oxford University Press, UK, 2001), Hall and Soskice classified capitalist countries into two broad groups: Liberal market economies (LMEs) such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and coordinated market economies (CMEs) such as Germany, France, Japan, Sweden and Austria. In LMEs, firms coordinate their interaction with each other and other stakeholders through hierarchies and the market.

The hunt for Canada’s last Nazis
tribute to a 98-year-old said to be Waffen SS member in the House of Commons.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized, and said he would consider releasing Canada’s Nazi war crimes files. So far the government’s only action has been to further declassify a study prepared for Canada’s 1987 Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals. The gaffe in Parliament resurrected a painful lapse in Canada’s post-war history: the failure to keep out or prosecute those who played a role in the Holocaust. In the decades following the war, Jewish groups alerted the government to the Nazis and collaborators who had slipped into Canada: an Auschwitz commander, a Gestapo member, soldiers, and camp guards.Their alleged crimes included torture, executions, massacres, liquidation of Jewish ghettoes and “participating in the extermination of Jews,” according to government records. Some of the allegations were specific. One suspect was accused of “having two women hosed down overnight with cold water for acts of sabotage” in Austria.

The Swiss watch that got Arnold Schwarzenegger in legal trouble in Germany sells for $290K
Vienna, Jan 19, 2024 -The Swiss watch that got Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger in trouble with German custom officials has been sold for 270,000 euros ($290,000), the actor's charity said Friday. The action hero-turned-environmental campaigner was held at Munich airport Wednesday for failing to declare the bespoke Audemars Piguet timepiece that was being auctioned for his climate charity. Schwarzenegger called his brush with the law a «wild experience» at the charity dinner Thursday where the watch was auctioned, cracking raunchy jokes about a female official who he said «was going to put me in handcuffs», according to a video posted on entertainment website TMZ. «Usually I pay $500 for that,» said the 76-year-old actor, a former governor of California. Schwarzenegger was held for three hours, according to the German media, before being allowed to take the watch to the dinner. The fundraiser for his Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative was held across the border in his native Austria in the Alpine resort of Kitzbuehel, with US climate envoy John Kerry said to be among the guests. «The world's most famous watch was auctioned off for 270,000 euros,» the charity said Friday. «Arnold Schwarzenegger's customs adventure had a happy ending,» it added. Duty should have been paid on the watch because Schwarzenegger was intending to sell it in the European Union, German customs spokesman Thomas Meister said.
