Priyank Kharge on Sunday discussed rolling out free public wifi zones in Bengaluru. “We plan to have about 5,000 public hotspots in Bengaluru,” Kharge told ET, saying it was a project he initiated as IT/BT Minister over five years ago, but was still stuck where it was. “We will start talking to telecom service as well as broadband service providers,” the IT/BT Minister said, adding that the government planned to roll it out by December. The long pending project is part of the Digital Karnataka goal, aiming to provide wifi access to everyone. With no investment from the government, the earlier plan was to give data free for the first 30 minutes or an hour and charge for use beyond that. In November 2019, the BBMP and ACT Fibernet signed an MoU to make public wifi available in nine months, but it remains a non-starter.

UPS country cover settlement Awaiting India's response on dispute settlement mechanism in proposed investment protection pact: EU trade commissioner
European Union on Saturday said it is awaiting India's response to its proposal for setting up of a dedicated dispute settlement mechanism under the bilateral investment protection pact that is being negotiated along with an ambitious free trade agreement (FTA) by the two sides. The EU's Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis told a small group of journalists that both sides are engaged in «intensive» negotiations on the proposed FTA and that «progress» has been made on various issues. But at the same time the top EU official, currently on a visit to India, noted that there is «still a lot of work ahead of us». Asked when the FTA can be sealed, he said the main focus has been on «substance over deadlines». To a question, Dombrovskis said there is no direct impact of New Delhi's trade ties with Moscow on the India-EU trade negotiations, adding: «In a sense, we do not see new topics emerging which could be obstacles for the FTA in this context.» Dombrovskis also allayed New Delhi's concerns over its proposed carbon tax on imports of high-carbon goods like steel, iron ore and described it as «non-discriminatory» measure aimed at protecting the planet. Over four months back, the European Union announced its decision to impose the carbon tax on imports on imports of steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers and electricity as part of its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The CBAM that will come into effect from 2026 is aimed at achieving net zero greenhouse emissions by 2050. «Given that the CBAM is non-discriminatory and non-trade distorted, it doesn't really affect certain countries' producers' ability to export to the EU.

UPS Ethereum Puzzle SpaceX Bitcoin week Bitcoin remained volatile this week owing to macroeconomic factors and lack of momentum
Bitcoin holdings, the repercussions of this move resonated far beyond its initial impact. The reverberations of SpaceX's decision sent shockwaves through the market, sparking a chain reaction of sell-offs that contributed to the downward trajectory. However, it's essential to acknowledge that this is just one piece of a complex puzzle contributing to the current market dynamics. Beyond the SpaceX announcement, other influencing factors also have played a role in shaping up the recent market trends. One noteworthy factor is the waning interest in Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). Additionally, macroeconomic factors, such as global economic conditions and governmental policies, are exerting their influence on the cryptocurrency space. On Friday, the selling pressure intensified ahead of the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s imminent speech. This anticipation of Powell’s speech has led many market participants to shift away from riskier assets, and this cautious sentiment isn't limited to cryptocurrencies alone. Traditional markets are also experiencing the impact of this uncertainty.

UPS Aviat Airlines Align country International Korean Air to weigh passengers on domestic, international flights
Korean Air has announced its compliance with aviation regulations by introducing passenger and carry-on luggage weight checks during the boarding process for both domestic and international flights. The airline's plan involves applying a standardized weight measurement to passengers, inclusive of their carry-on bags. According to a Korea Times report, this initiative will first be rolled out for domestic passengers at Gimpo International Airport from August 28 to September 6, followed by international passengers at Incheon International Airport from September 8 to September 19. The data collected from these checks will remain anonymous and will primarily serve safety operations purposes, ensuring adherence to proper weight distribution within the aircraft. Passengers who choose not to participate in these weight measurements can easily communicate their decision to the airline staff during the boarding process. This move aligns with the guidelines set out in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's «Aircraft Weight and Balance Management Standards,» which necessitate airlines to periodically measure passenger standard weights to establish accurate weight and balance calculations for aircraft. While the weight standards were determined at 81 kg for adult males and 69 kg for adult females in a local 2017 survey, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prescribes slightly higher figures of 88.4 kg for adult males and 70.3 kg for adult females.
