Global AI guidelines 'normative', unclear about implementation, say researchers
global guidelines around the use of AI, researchers found that while most of the guidelines valued privacy, transparency, and accountability, very few valued truthfulness, intellectual property, or children's rights. Further, most of these guidelines described ethical principles and values without proposing practical methods for implementing them and without pushing for legally binding regulation, a team of researchers from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, found. To determine if a global consensus existed regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI), the researchers identified and analysed 200 documents related to AI ethics and governance published between 2014 and 2022 from 37 countries and six continents and written or translated into five different languages — English, Portuguese, French, German and Spanish.

Govt may impose sugar export ban
NEW DELHI : India may shift sugar exports to the ‘prohibited’ category from ‘restricted’ for the entire 2023-24 (October-September) season, concerned about the impact of the weakest monsoon in five years on sugarcane crops in the major producing states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, two government officials said. Sugar mills can currently apply for an export quota under the restricted category, but moving to the prohibited category would mean a complete export ban. “Sugar output is expected to fall to 30 million tonnes (mt) in the 2023-24 sugar season against domestic consumption of 27.5-28 mt due to El Nino compromising monsoon rain in August," one of the officials said.

The ‘Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse: When and where to witness this celestial spectacle
solar eclipse produces a mesmerizing "ring of fire." These unique celestial occurrences are similar to total solar eclipses, with one crucial difference — the moon is positioned at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth, preventing it from completely obscuring the sun. This results in a breathtaking display as the sun's brilliant light encircles the moon's shadow.

India's September palm oil imports drop 26% MoM on higher stocks
palm oil imports in September fell 26% from the previous month to 834,797 metric tons, the lowest in three months, as higher inventories prompted refiners to curtail purchases, a trade body said on Friday. Lower purchases by the world's biggest importer of vegetable oils could lead to higher stocks of palm oil in key producers Indonesia and Malaysia, weighing on benchmark futures. Imports of soyoil edged 0.1% higher to 358,557 tons and those of sunflower oil were down about 17.8% at 300,732 tons, the Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said in a statement. Vegetable oil imports fell about 17% to 1.55 million tons from last month's record purchases of 1.87 million tons, it added. «India imported more than necessary during July and August, but retail demand in the country is weak. Refiners are now struggling to sell imported oil,» said a Mumbai-based edible oil trader. In recent months, India has emerged as a primary destination for surplus oil supplies due to its lower import duty of 5.5% on crude palm oil, crude soybean oil, and crude sunflower oil, said B.V.
