markets Analysis wellness Trade Experts country rights Nilesh Shah advises investors to focus on quality, avoid smallcap SIPs amid market uncertainty
«In those days, when Sunil Gavaskar used to get out, the hopes on rest of the batsmen was very-very low. Today, barring India, most other countries in emerging market like Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, have not delivered return to investors. Over 20-year period, emerging markets underperformed developed markets,» says Nilesh Shah, MD, Kotak AMC. Exactly a month ago, this market had a lot of event risk, budget, Trump and tariffs, then there was RBI, MPC, and then Delhi elections. Thankfully for us, we have come on the right side of all the individual events. So, if events were making markets nervous and if the events are behind us and we have been on the right side of the event, then do you think it is a matter of time markets will stabilise? Nilesh Shah: So, in our opinion, while there are certain events which are behind us, there are few things which will keep market on the volatile side. One, we are in a world which is increasingly becoming protectionist from globalised, with Trump administration launching newer and newer initiatives for America first, there will be concerns on geopolitical side.

markets UPS Analysis Align Trade Experts rights Rupee fairly valued, may reach new lows, aligning with other peer group currencies: Mahendra Kumar Jajoo
Mahendra Kumar Jajoo, Head-Fixed Income, Mirae Asset Investment, says the rupee is currently valued at 87-87.5 which he considers fair value and may reach new lows, aligning with other currencies. Downward pressure is due to selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs). However, as March approaches, we expect the Reserve Bank to implement measures in its monetary policy to help banks attract more foreign currency deposits, including the FCNR(B) scheme and eased criteria for external commercial borrowing (ECB). Where do you see the rupee headed because it has been weakening further. It touched an all-time low on Wednesday. Mahendra Kumar Jajoo: After the depreciation in the last one month, rupee is now largely in line with the peers in the rest of the global markets. Currencies like Brazilian Real or Mexican Peso have been depreciating by about 15% to 20% in the last one year. Rupee on a year-to-year basis is just down about 5%. So, there was a period in October, November when the rupee was outperforming all the other major currencies and I think that correction has now been done.

COST UPS Target Pool Trade Rise to Trump's tariff challenge
Voluntary export controls by trading partners improve their competitiveness. Fair trade restrictions do not restore the cost advantage for local employment. Even if some form of protectionism can be defended in theory, it is typically captured by interests narrower than national welfare, leading to rent-seeking. The US has tried these approaches since the 1950s and has not been able to make much headway in arresting its trade deficit with the rest of the world. With every passing decade, the target of US protectionism changes: Opec, Japan, China — now it's the turn of India, Brazil and Canada.
