Is India losing interest in travelling post-Covid pandemic? Here's what this report says
CNBC report. Other than falling trend of travelling in many countries, leisure travelling continues to be popular in countries like China, Mexico, Japan, and Brazil, reported CNBC citing Morning Consult’s “The State of Travel & Hospitality" study published in September. At the global level, the falling interest in travelling in most of the countries can be explained by the fading away of the phenomenon of ‘revenge travelling’.

Covid variant Pirola now 'in most UK regions'
The highly-mutated Covid variant Pirola has now spread to «most regions in the UK» with experts anticipatinga further surge in infections as the country heads into autumn. UK's Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) said that the strain has been spotted in most parts of the UK. “The BA.2.86 continues to transmit across the UK, with isolated cases being detected in various regions,” a spokesperson for the agency said. UKHSA Chief Medical Advisor Susan Hopkins said, “While this is still very early data and more research is needed before we can be certain, it is encouraging to see an initial indication that BA.2.86 demonstrates similar levels of antibody escape compared to other variants circulating in the UK. Hopkins further said that there was no evidence to suggest that Pirola strain can make people seriously ill. «The data is too limited, but there is so far no evidence to suggest that the strain is more likely to make people seriously ill than other Omicron variants in circulation. She also urged people to take a booster dose for protection against the new variant. “The autumn vaccination programme started this month, and this new data shows once again how important it is that the most vulnerable among us are fully vaccinated in order to receive the greatest possible protection.

Khalistan supporters gather outside Indian Embassy in UK, security beefed up
Indian Embassy in the UK after pro-Khalistani groups gathered to stage a protest outside the building in London on Monday. There has been a heavy presence of British security forces at the High Commission in London, and the protesters have been restricted to the opposite side of the building. Indian High Commissioner denied entry to gurdwara in Scotland A few days ago, the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Dorwaiswami was stopped from entering a gurdwara in the city of Glasgow by pro-Khalistan extremists, an incident the Indian mission dubbed as “disgraceful” before reporting it to the UK government. In a statement issued on Saturday, the High Commission of India in London said that three people from outside Scotland “deliberately disrupted“ the visit on Friday evening and one even attempted to violently force open the diplomatic vehicle as senior diplomats arrived at Glasgow Gurdwara Guru Granth Sahib on Albert Drive. As they hurled threats and abuses, the High Commissioner (HC) and Consul General of India (CG) decided to leave the premises to avert any further altercation. “On September 29, 2023, three persons — all from areas outside Scotland — disrupted a planned interaction organised by the Gurdwara Committee for the community, the High Commissioner (HC) and the Consul General of India (CG),” said the High Commission of India statement. “This interaction was to discuss community and consular issues.

Flexible hours, sick pay and meals, workers in the UK get a better deal
For his manager, Barrie Chapman, the overtime he now gets is a huge boost once unheard of in the hospitality sector. Their regional manager Jen Eaton looks back in horror at the 14-hour shifts she once worked in casinos in heels with no break. Like thousands of others in lower-paid sectors of the British economy, all three have benefited from a gradual improvement in employment terms since the global pandemic and Brexit forced companies to work harder to find staff in a tight labour market. The shift follows years of warnings from unions and campaign groups that the balance of power in Britain had swung too far towards employers, leaving many lower-paid staff working unpredictable hours with poor benefits and little protection. Nick Collins, CEO of Loungers which employs Eaton, Chapman and Hughes-Davies among 8,000 staff in restaurants and bars across Britain, said expectations of employees had risen.
