The UK will adopt a target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 81% against 1990 levels by 2035, Keir Starmer said today (12 November) on the sidelines of the summit in Azerbaijan. As had been widely expected, Starmer confirmed the new target would form the basis for the UK's updated national climate plan, known as the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in UN jargon, which the government is required to submit in support of the Paris Agreement. The government described the new NDC goal as «ambitious and pragmatic», adding that it would help to strengthen the UK's position as...

BoE's Huw Pill warns inflation not tamed as 'quite sticky' wage growth persists
Following the release of labour market data from the Office for National Statistics this morning (12 November), Pill told a conference organised by Swiss bank UBS «pay growth remains quite sticky at elevated levels». Investors bet on slower pace of rate cuts from BoE as Budget stokes inflation risks These are «levels that – given the outlook for productivity growth in the UK – are hard to reconcile with the UK inflation target», the Monetary Policy Committee member argued. UK wage growth cooled less than expected in the three months to September, with annual growth in employees' a...

Tech giant Meta is partnering with universities in the UK to launch the ‘Meta for Education beta program’ to test Meta Quest devices. “Meta Quest devices are wireless all-in-one mixed reality devices” with features such as boundary, passthrough and hand tracking, according to the company’s website. Educators are trying out VR and XR prototypes in their classrooms in order to achieve this, Meta said. Along with giving early access to a range of apps and features to the university partners, the beta test will be an opportunity for the students to experience metaverse technologies up close which could otherwise be inaccessible to them.

Controversy in Haridwar over invite to Muslim MLAs at Har-ki-Pauri ghat
Haridwar after the district administration invited three Muslim MLAs to an event at Har-ki-Pauri ghat for the state foundation day. The move was reportedly opposed by the Ganga Sabha, which manages the ghat, says a TOI report. It argued that the three legislators should not have been invited as «non-Hindus are not allowed entry at the ghat since long, and the British had also made it a rule under the Haridwar Municipal Act of 1935.» The event, held on Monday in the presence of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami and a host of other BJP leaders, featured cultural performances and a light show, with over 3.5 lakh diyas lit across 52 ghats. As part of protocol, the Haridwar district administration had invited Congress MLA from Piran Kaliyar Furqan Ahmed, BSP MLA from Laksar Mohammad Shahzad, and Congress MLA from Manglaur Qazi Nizamuddin. However, none of the MLAs attended.
