Environment policy needs federalism to play a big role
climate change management. This is especially true for countries like India that are likely to bear more than their fair share of the climate-action burden, given that it is mostly the actions of others that led the world to this crisis. India also has a high proportion of people directly employed in natural resource dependent sectors.

Yellowknife nearly emptied as fire fight continues: ‘Most of the people are now gone’
Northwest Territories, where officials say the weather has helped slow the threat of an encroaching wildfire. An evacuation order issued Wednesday for Yellowknife, a city of 20,000, had a deadline of Friday noon, and RCMP were going door to door urging people to leave.Officials say more than 19,000 people complied with the evacuation, leaving in streams of vehicles south down the highway or by air on evacuation flights. They say about 2,600 people remain in the city — 1,000 of them essential workers. As of Friday night, wind continued to pose an imminent threat and the fire remained about 15 kilometres from the northwest edge of the city.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited some evacuees in Edmonton and commended all for a “thoughtful, orderly evacuation.”Many evacuees have travelled to different areas of Alberta but some were also being flown to Manitoba.Emergency teams, crews working on the fire, utilities workers and the RCMP were among those remaining in the city.“Yellowknife feels like a ghost town at the moment, that’s for sure,” said Vincent Meslage, an essential worker.Meslage and a friend spent the better part of Friday driving people to the airport to get on evacuation flights.“There were some people that were still stressed out, other people remained calm,” he said.“At the end of the day, most of the people are now gone.”Meslage said the last gas station has closed in Yellowknife. So have all the stores and restaurants.Smoke lifted briefly in Yellowknife but returned Friday evening.Mike Westwick, a wildfire information officer, said cooler temperatures and more moisture in the air aided the fight and the fire didn’t move much.Unfortunately, no rain showed up.

Students deported from US may face five-year entry ban
United States and had their student visa cancel could face a five-year entry ban to the country, TOI in a report said. These students can also face problems when they try entering other popular international study destinations such as Canada, the UK, and Australia, experts said The same report also said that this can also create long-term implications for these individuals if they want to get an H1B visa in the future unless endorsed by major MNCs. Financially, the cancellation of the F1 visa results in substantial losses as students forfeit expenses including visa fees, airfare, university application costs, consultant charges, and more, which could total around ₹3 lakh.

British Columbia wildfires intensify, doubling evacuations to over 35,000
Canada's western province of British Columbia intensified further on Saturday, doubling the number of people under an evacuation order to 35,000 from a day earlier, as authorities warned of difficult days ahead. The province declared a state of emergency on Friday, to access temporary authoritative powers to tackle fire-related risks, as out-of-control fires ripped through interior British Columbia and partially shut down some sections of a key transit route between the Pacific coast and the rest of western Canada, and destroyed many properties. «The current situation is grim,» Premier Daniel Eby told reporters on Saturday, saying some 35,000 people are under an evacuation order, and a further 30,000 were under evacuation alert.

Canada’s Oil-Rich Alberta Province Halts Renewable-Energy Projects
TORONTO—Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta has become the latest jurisdiction to push back against renewable-energy initiatives, declaring a seven-month moratorium on new wind and solar projects. The pause put in place by the province’s conservative government has provoked criticism from members of the renewables industry, which says the move threatens to undermine a fast-growing sector that has been contributing a growing share of energy to Alberta’s power grid. Alberta, which is home to Canada’s oil sands, the fourth-largest oil reserve in the world, announced earlier this month that it would pause until Feb.
