View: India shouldn’t let its data turn Chinese
That has, quietly, changed. While few believe Indian statisticians are actively working to make growth numbers look better than they are, less and less data is publicly available, methods are less transparent, and the GDP figures in particular sometimes diverge puzzlingly from independent data. The minister in charge of statistics recently told Parliament that the government planned to ask a new committee to recommend how it should update its national accounts. Official statisticians should seize this opportunity to overhaul how India’s GDP is calculated in order to win back trust.

Spike in Billions, at a blue blistering pace
UBS Billionaire Ambitions Report 2024' released last week, wealth of India's billionaires surged 42% to over $905 bn during the last FY, making it the third-largest 'bill-base' behind the US and China. Rising population of Indian billionaires, too, is drawing international attention with their numbers poised to jump over the next decade. Rapidly growing economies tend to be generous with entrepreneurs who push the growth envelope. India's growth spurt will have a deep impact on manufacturing, which is expected to serve as the nursery for entrepreneur billionaires. But the similarities being drawn with China's experience may not be quite apt. India's growth is likely to be dependent significantly more on services. There is a pretty well-established method to acquiring scale in manufacturing that relies heavily on capital. Services offer greater creativity to entrepreneurs wanting to scale up. A decade later, India's billionaires could very well surprise on the upside. India is also gaining access to capital and tech. Improvements in labour force endowments through stepped up social security will contribute to the process. The country is also placed favourably in the evolving landscape of globalisation driven by services as protectionist walls are erected in manufacturing.

TikTok hires ex-Trump administration lawyer ahead of Supreme Court appeal
TikTok and its Chinese owner ByteDance have turned to a veteran US Supreme Court lawyer as they prepare to ask the justices to block a law that could ban the popular short video platform in the United States. Noel Francisco, who served as US solicitor general during Republican President-elect Donald Trump's first administration, will represent TikTok along with his partner Hashim Mooppan at law firm Jones Day, court papers show. As the Justice Department's top Supreme Court advocate from 2017 to 2020, Francisco defended Trump's ban on people from six predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States. He has argued more than 20 cases before the high court.

Missile frigate INS Tushil inducted into Indian Navy in Russia
Indian Navy's Russian-manufactured guided missile frigate INS Tushil was commissioned into the force at Russia's coastal city of Kaliningrad on Monday. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and several other senior Indian officials were present at the commissioning ceremony. INS Tushil is expected to significantly bolster the Indian Navy's operational capability in the Indian Ocean, a region that has witnessed increasing forays by China's PLA Navy in the last few years. The warship has been constructed in Russia as part of an over USD 2.5-billion deal that New Delhi had inked with Moscow in 2016 for four stealth frigates for the Indian Navy.

Turning Trump’s tariffs on China into opportunities: These are the Indian products with additional export potential
Donald Trump’s election back into the office has begun with his loud announcements on heightened tariffs which has sparked concerns around the world. He recently targeted Mexico, Canada, and China, stating that if they fail to address the issue of illegal migration and drug smuggling into the US, he will impose a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico; and “an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs” on goods from China. While Trump has left India out of his initial tariff plans, he has made an announcement that if the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries create their own currency or back an existing currency to replace the United States dollar, the US will impose a 100% import tariff on these countries. As the world navigates through a realm of likely scenarios, when it comes to how the US exercises tariffs, there is China and then the rest of the world!

India slams developed countries for climate crisis at ICJ hearing
ICJ) on Thursday, saying they exploited the global carbon budget, failed to honour climate-finance promises and are now demanding that developing countries restrict their resource use. The court is examining what legal obligations countries have to address climate change and the consequences if they fail. India also urged the ICJ to avoid creating new obligations that go beyond the existing climate-change framework. «The court may exercise due caution to avoid devising new or additional obligations beyond what is already agreed under the existing climate-change regime, which take into consideration historic emissions, climate justice and the principal principle of equity and CBDR-RC, as well as the equitable access to the global carbon budget,» the country said.
