The US under Trump must not repeat its profiling of Chinese scientists
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Donald Trump’s return to the White House is stoking fears that he could reinstate a failed scheme launched during his first term that aimed to crack down on Chinese espionage, but ended up becoming more of a witch-hunt. Doing so would not only be destructive to American innovation, but give China an upper-hand in the tech race.

Rupee rises on residual equity index rejig inflows, sidesteps weak Asia FX
dollar inflows related to the rejig of MSCI's global equity indexes, which helped it sidestep weakness in regional peers after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threat rattled markets. The rupee was at 84.23 against the U.S. dollar as of 09:40 a.m. IST, its highest level in nearly three weeks, following its previous close of 84.2875. The dollar pared early gains made in Asia trading after Trump said he would impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China.

Can India overcome its massive trade deficit with strategic manufacturing policies?
Other than the need to import gold and oil, the heart of our trade deficit stems from imbalanced trade with Asian economies. Of these, the biggest is our trade deficit with China, at over $83 bn a year. Our industrial machine can’t compete with the Chinese one as they sell to us 6× what we sell to them. Is this all a result of free trade? Not quite. What really exists are state-backed national manufacturing systems that compete for the best industries in the world economy. And that is where China, along with other East Asian nations, has had tremendous success.

Apple’s Tim Cook joins CEO summit with China premier as economy sags
Tim Cook joined more than 20 corporate leaders in discussions with China’s premier Monday, as global companies grapple with potential trade disruptions and economic uncertainty. Cook, who’s visiting the country for at least the third time this year, joined top executives of global firms including Rio Tinto Plc, Corning Inc. and Charoen Pokphand Group in a meeting with Li Qiang, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing a private session. Chinese corporate chiefs including the heads of Lenovo Group and ICBC also attended the discussions focused on supply chain and trade issues, according to a guest list seen by Bloomberg News. The event comes ahead of a supply chain expo in Beijing that starts on Tuesday.

For years, through carefully choreographed dinners and meetings, Apple CEO Tim Cook did something that has eluded many other corporate leaders: He developed a personal relationship with President-elect Donald Trump. Apple should have learned a Chinese lesson on EVs
China over the past year has often felt like watching a looking-glass parody of the US. In America, electric vehicles have been in retreat all year. General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. have scaled back expansion plans and cut jobs amid flagging demand for battery cars. Analyst expectations for Tesla Inc.’s fiscal 2024 net income are barely a third of what they were two years ago. Even Apple Inc. junked its 10-year, multi-billion secretive project to build a revolutionary EV. On the other side of the Pacific, things couldn’t be more different. Battery and plug-in cars, which made up just 5% or so of the market in 2020, comprised 49.8% of all car sales in October, and only one out of the top 10 sellers came without a plug. Even the threat of tariffs from trade partners has barely slowed manufacturers’ global ambitions. What’s more, phone companies have, almost overnight, become major players.

Trump's policies may open new doors for India's defence sector: Report
Donald Trump has far-reaching implications for global trade and geopolitics. According to a report by Motilal Oswal, this policy carries mixed outcomes for exporters worldwide because it is designed to prioritize U.S. manufacturing by reducing imports, particularly from China. For India, Trump's policies present both opportunities and challenges. The Indo-Pacific defense strategy could strengthen U.S.-India collaboration, opening doors for Indian businesses in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and defense.

Adani charges to test Trump’s desire to keep India in US orbit
Huawei Technologies Co. for breaching US laws shocked President Xi Jinping’s inner circle and raised questions over whether Donald Trump would intervene in the case. Trump now faces a similar dilemma after US prosecutors charged Gautam Adani — India’s most powerful businessman and a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — in a $250 million bribery scheme. While Modi’s party called it a private matter, and Adani’s company denied the allegations, the case threatens to roil US-India diplomatic ties. Although Trump didn’t intervene in the Huawei case, which was eventually settled in 2021 after he left office, on its face he’ll have more incentive to make this case go away. Beyond Trump’s personal connection with Modi, the incoming US president has packed his team with China hawks who want to see stronger ties with India to counterbalance Beijing’s power in the region.
