How TikTok grew from a fun app for teens into a potential national security threat?
TikTok has been around forever, that's probably because it has, at least if you're measuring via internet time. What's now in question is whether it will be around much longer and, if so, in what form? Starting in 2017, when the Chinese social video app merged with its competitor Musical.ly, TikTok has grown from a niche teen app into a global trendsetter. While, of course, also emerging as a potential national security threat, according to U.S.

US courts may take note of India’s stance on TikTok: FCC chief Brendan Carr
India’s swift and preemptive action against TikTok could be a feature that plays out in American courts as the ByteDance-owned firm is likely to challenge the US move to ban its video-hosting service, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioner Brendan Carr told ET in an exclusive interaction. Carr’s comments come close on the heels of a stringent directive issued to the popular app by US President Joe Biden on Wednesday. He signed a bill that requires TikTok’s Chinese parent ByteDance to divest ownership of the app or face the ban in the next nine to 12 months. ByteDance said it is not considering selling the app with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew asserting that the facts and the US Constitution were on the company’s side. TikTok’s official account on microblogging platform X has been stating that a potential ban on its app in the US would “trample the free speech” of 170 million Americans.

How China's iPhone killer has sharpened its knife
Apple's iPhone is facing pressure from resurgent and aggressive local brands in China. The biggest threat it faces is from Huawei Technologies Co which has been in a geopolitical chokehold of the US which had sanctioned it to throttle its sources of cutting-edge technology. But now it seems Huawei has managed to achieve on its own what the US had been preventing it to. A smartphone it released last year had surprised the US, indicating that Huawei was able to spring back from the crippling impact of sanctions. In the backdrop of these technological and geopolitical tussles, Apple is suddenly losing its base in China. As Huawei, which produces high-end phones that compete with Apple's, manages to continue rapid innovation, Apple's iPhone faces an almost existential threat in China. Some might see its India entry as a counter to the looming threat.

Copper and aluminium prices at multi-year highs. Here’s why
Copper and aluminium, the most used industrial metals, have gained substantially in the past few weeks. The rally was associated with supply uncertainties and a notable increase in global demand. The Western ban on Russian metals, hopes of US rate cuts, and diversification of holdings of central banks also uplifted the sentiments. Copper futures are hovering near lifetime highs in the key Chinese markets, while they are trading at two-year highs on futures platforms like LME and MCX. Aluminium prices are currently at record levels in Indian markets, gaining over 20 percent since the start of the year.

Latest version of made-in-China chip powers new Huawei phone
Huawei Technologies Co's latest smartphones carry a version of the advanced made-in-China processor it revealed last year, independent analysis revealed, underscoring the Chinese company's ability to sustain production of the controversial chip. The Pura 70 series Huawei unveiled last week sports the Kirin 9010 processor, consultancy TechInsights found in a teardown of the device. That's a newer version of the Kirin 9000s made by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. for the Mate 60 Pro, which alarmed officials in Washington who thought a 7-nanometer chip beyond China's capabilities.

‘A damn hard thing to do’: Tesla co-founder JB Straubel takes on battery recycling
Tesla Inc. co-founder JB Straubel wasn’t content with simply reinventing the automobile for the 21st century. He left in 2019 feeling he needed to redesign the global supply chain for the electrified future, too. That’s exactly what he’s been doing for the last five years. The company he built, Redwood Materials, is now the largest battery recycler in North America, and it’s using those recycled materials to manufacture complex battery components that have traditionally been imported from abroad, largely from China. Straubel recently opened the doors for a first peek at the 300-acre industrial campus he’s built in the western Nevada desert. He said it hasn’t been easy.

ByteDance prefers TikTok shutdown in US if legal options fail: report
TikTok owner ByteDance would prefer to shut down its loss-making app rather than sell it if the Chinese company exhausts all legal options to fight legislation to ban the platform from app stores in the U.S., four sources said. The algorithms TikTok relies on for its operations are deemed core to ByteDance's overall operations, which would make a sale of the app with algorithms highly unlikely, said the sources close to the parent.

However, TikTok has strongly denied the allegations saying it has never share US user data with Beijing and it will never do so.
