EU cannot close borders to solar imports, energy chief says
BRUSSELS: The European Union should support struggling European manufacturers of solar panels, but cannot close its borders to imports of such products, EU energy policy chief Kadri Simson said on Monday. Factory closures among Europe's few solar panel makers have prompted the industry to seek emergency support from Brussels — potentially including trade restrictions on cheap Chinese imports that European companies have struggled to compete with. However, Simson ruled out cutting off imports, which she said could compromise the EU's ability to install enough solar energy capacity to meet climate targets. Most solar panels and parts deployed in Europe are imported from China.

Post demerger, passenger vehicles to remain Tata Motors long-term story: Digant Haria
Digant Haria, Co-Founder, GreenEdge Wealth, says once more details of the merger come out, most of the people would like to be in the passenger vehicles part of the demerged business, the one which is doing well and that has a lot of potential. The CV finance division and the CV division, both will be a part of the same entity. That is something which is very, very cyclical and which has given pain to this company in the past as well. So yes, excitement will be there. But the long term story is still with the passenger vehicle part. What is it that you have made of the Tata Motors demerger and what should investors who own Tata Motors shares now look forward to? Digant Haria: The best part about Tata Motors still remains the success in the domestic premium car market. Electric vehicles are still only a story. And China has already taken a big lead in electric vehicles. Even Tesla is struggling. So the story here still is about passenger vehicles and we all know that commercial vehicles (CVs) are deeply cyclical. So once more details of the merger come out, most of the people would like to be in the passenger vehicles part of the demerged business, the one which is doing well and that has a lot of potential.

Fractures in global trade deepen as WTO musters only a small win
barriers to commerce, ensure stability through global accords and enforce the rules came under renewed criticism following a chaotic and contentious meeting of its top officials. The 13th ministerial conference in Abu Dhabi last week laid bare an uncomfortable truth: For an organization that needs all 166 member countries to agree, the WTO again struggled to muster even a small win. Those are only getting messier and harder to pull off in an era of two armed conflicts, widening geopolitical gulfs and a realignment of the trading ties that bind the postwar economic order. Meetings in the capital of the United Arab Emirates — positioned both geographically and geo-economically between US-European Union and China-Russia alliances — were dominated by disorder and confusion, according to several participants, who asked not to be named speaking about the private talks. They’re rarely jovial affairs, but hopes were quickly dashed that this year would be a turning point toward unity.

There was more action in bitcoin, which gained 1.2% to $68,341 after surging more than 7% on Monday. The blockchain asset has benefited from flows into cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, most notably in the United States.

Asian stocks skid as China's NPC disappoints, bitcoin nears record
stocks stumbled on Tuesday, dragging Asian peers with them, as investors showed their disappointment at Beijing's plans to support the economy as its week-long annual session of parliament, the National People's Congress, got underway. Equities around the rest of the region were also on the back foot following a retreat from record highs on Wall Street overnight on signs the U.S. Federal Reserve is in no hurry to cut interest rates. U.S. stock futures also pointed lower.

Chinese premier says economic growth target is about 5%, on par with last year's rate
Li Qiang has announced that China's economic growth target for this year is around 5%, in line with last year's performance despite forecasts for a slowdown. The ruling Communist Party has said it is prioritizing efforts to encourage consumer spending to help drive the economy. Last year, the economy grew at a 5.2% pace, but that was after a very slow 3% annual growth rate in 2022, when the country was enduring the worst disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic.
